Emmision woes
« on: 16 May 2008, 10:35 »
Golf coming up to mot time and Im about to sort out my plumes of smoke problem. Think its the valve stems so gonna have a crack at them in the next few weeks but in the meantime im trying to set my co using Rubjohnnys guide and its not going quite right  When I turn my mixture screw in instead of the revs dropping as they should they increase so I cant even get a base setting. Blocked breather from flying saucer and unplugged blue semp sender and revved to 3 grand 3 times but no joy. Was a new temp sender last year from vag..any ideas what im doing wrong or is the metering device shagged?

My main problem is the car is used round town mainly but when I take it down the bypass (say a week or so of town driving)I get plumes of smoke that fill the road for a few minutes and then it stops, still smokey but not filling road. Booked it for a co setup down garage but went down there this morning and they were to busy so trying to roughly set up myself..any ideas ppl?

Has the ECU been chipped? I had this problem and it turned out to be the ECU at fault. Someone had chipped previously, very badly and it caused all sorts of damage. Had to re-ring the pistons and glaze bust the bores.
Also do a test of the Air Flow Meter. There is a procedure in the Haynes on how to do it with a multimeter. If the AFM is at fault, the engine will never run right. Also check all vacuum, air and sense lines from the injector for air leaks.

Just a few thoughts...

Aside from the CO setting, if your worried about the MOT emission test a new set of plugs, air filter, a bottle of redex and an oil change can work wonders.

A mates dad (a mechanic) has gotten "town driven only" cars that have failed the test through their MOT just by dumping a bottle of redex in it.

Dunno if it been chipped buddy, how dya tell? I will look into the air flow meter being faulty though..cheers for that

Hmm was thinking maybe doing that. Father in law told me to stick some slick50 through it?? swears by the stuff. Trouble is I dont like driving it now cos its getting a bit embarresing :undecided: Its been like this since I bought it last year, in fact I feel a bit stiched up cos I asked the seller if it smoked "no, no no". It dint smoke that I could see on test drive but paid for car got mot and advisory said "excessive smoke". Its the only car Ive had that I really, really like. Not in the best of condition but it does bring a smile to me face when driving it
Hmm just read on another thread bout leaking injectors? is this a possibilty?

What colour is the smoke?

Stem seal test  =  With a hot engine... heavy acceleration, lift off and let the revs drop right down, then back on with heavy acceleration. Check for smoke out the back.
