I hate the tossers that tailgate. I always make a habit of slowing down further just to prove a point.

I'm referring to driving at 80 MPH on a dry day, very good visibility and sparce traffic. Obviously travelling fast when wet/high traffic density is a very bad idea.

I am a traffic cop - but like most in traffic I love cars and am realistic about 'nice' cars, roads and drivers

Is it true traffic cops turn a blind eye to cars going 80 MPH on a sensible road such as a dual carriageway?

I do ... so long as the dual carraigeway is a 70 limit ...... but I am only one individual ....

I would think most officers have something far better to do than stopping a driver doing 80 in a 70 - unless you go past them at 80 as that implies you are not paying attention to what is around you ....

My 2 pence worth is that I'm sure any traffic Policeman who has been to a road accident would try to recommend to any people he came across  driving fast or reckless to slow down a bit.
I watched a TV program recently where a young girl who was a passenger in a car that had rolled over died while holding an officers hand as he kept her company waiting for an Ambulance to attend.

Where I live, althought the speed limit is 35mph, there have been a lot of fatalities involving young people in high powered cars. With it being a small Island, you sometimes know of the person involved, and that makes it hit home and you appreciate what the Police have to deal with. Even though you may be p$ssed of at being stopped, being polite and honest will always pay off.

I appreciate all the replies and the advice too. Im not a lunatic so I am not going to risk my life getting away from them... but in this instance I would have got to my junction and turned off... up a short hill and by then he would have been pretty good to guess which way I have gone.

I knew he would have cctv in his car (being a traffic cop) which is why I was quite confident if i took the matter further i.e a complaint I would have asked them to track down the driver I over took and ask him his opinion on my driving. Either way he wouldnt have got me. im not saying its the right thing to do.. its just what I would do as i know my area very well and know that he simply wouldnt know where i went. so regardless of him turning up at my house there aint shizzel he can do about it.

Story I've heard, second-hand but from someone who was apparently 'there', I'll leave it up to yourselves to decide whether it's true, or how much truth is in it.

(I told this story to my brother, he's an ex-bike cop and he says that when you're on a bike you're a biker first and a bobby second.)

Anyway - this lad and three or four of his mates were on their motorbikes, fairly high-powered stuff, on a weekend jaunt. They always behave very sensibly in town and when there's traffic around but would let rip in the country.

They were doing 30 in a 30 limit and noticed that a couple of police motorcyclists were behind them / following them. They weren't doing anything wrong so weren't concerned. The police followed them for about 15 minutes through a variety of road conditions and obviously decided these lads were good motorcyclists.

They then hit a national speed limit area and naturally the lads increased their speed up to 60, but no more as there were police behind them.

One of the police motorcyclists then overtook them, and started slowing down. The lads were a bit confused by this, but as there were no signals from the police they would overtake when they could, but stick to 60.

This overtaking / slowing down happened 3 or 4 times in the countryside, one of the lads got p!ssed off and just thought foook this, and really let rip, overtaking the police motorcyclist in front.

Anyway - the police started racing the lads, hitting 100-120 mph on country roads. This went on for miles and miles.

They hit a town and the police peeled off, giving the lads 'thumbs ups' but reminding them also to 'calm down' with hand signals (think Harry Enfield's Scousers )

Just shows you - the police are human too - and so long as you are seen to be behaving yourself you'll be left well alone.

There are SOME decent cops out of there that will let you have a bit of fun in an safe environment but don't forget there are also some right tossers out there too.

Nice to read the story anyway, if it's true that is.

I get pulled from time to time, sometimes for my driving but mostly because of my age. Being quite young they seem to like to pull me for a few checks which really really pisses me off!! Like people say you get good cops and bad cops but invariably they are complete idiots who I have no time for whatsoever. I have a theory that the idiots were bullied as children and they are getting revenge on motorists. I got wound up and lost my cool once and that just got me into more trouble. If I get pulled now I just keep calm and agree to everything they say.

same here, i got pulled 14 times in my first 1 1/2 years of driving, ive been driving about 4 years now and am well over 20 times, also i have only ever been proscuted once for doing between 95 and 105 on the motorway, got 5 points. and a 150 pounds fine, but i have had a crash and wrote of my ctr  :embarassed: :embarassed: 6 month ban

I personally do not have any issues with the cops. My mom got her first ever speeding fine in the GTi (Heaven knows how..She drives the thing like its a Corsa) and I think that what the cops do is good.

Obviously in your case R32UK you got a bad cop. But maybe you should rather not let this get to you. Lay a complaint and in the big picture. We all have bad days. Just be happy that the plod has left you alone with all the races you have had. And that you have had a few lucky escapes.

And maybe check the Xenons... Maybe they are a bit off centre
