advice on imported gtis?
« on: 15 May 2008, 20:30 »
well ive seen a nice dsg gti today with plenty of toys but its a uk import??

now ive rang vw and they say its a car thats imported in this country by other dealers which have only 2years warranty.. now when vw dealers import the cars they offer an extra years warranty with it.

so anyway i asked him for his personal opinion and he said its still a gti and nothings different just maybe when i come to sell it ill have to ask that little bit lower.. he also said they have a few imported gtis that they sell, im guessing they are partxs that people have traded in.

but he said he dont see why i shouldnt go for it and try getting the price down and asking for an extra years warranty.

what do you guys think??

Car is the same at the end of the day, check for those non-standard UK bits like climate.  As for price, cheaper to buy new, cheaper to buy 2nd hand - just dont expect it to be worth as much as a UK car.

Swings and roundabouts I'm afraid. Cheaper to buy in the first place, but you will lose come resale time.

Still a GTI, but make sure it has a full UK spec (some don't) and some dealers will try to shaft you on warranty work and repairs.

You will be better off selling privately when you come to shift it on.

I base this experience on owning an imported Audi TT in 2000. Saved a bunch but also lost a bunch at resale/trade.

as said, not allot of difference in the cars, but come resale time you may struggle to sell (if i was buying one 2nd hand i wouldnt really want an import and would go for a UK car), and dealers will offer you less

Mine is classed at a UK import.  Cost me £16k which was a f-ing steal as it would have been around £18.5k otherwise

You need to check things like the alarm system, aircon, trim etc. These do differ from country to country as the standard spec is not the same across Europe. Ask the dealer/seller if the car conforms to FULL UK spec and get that in writing as part of any sale/purchase agreement :undecided:

I'm on my 2nd import GTi and hav'nt encountered any problems....saved thousands on new and got around £500 less on trade-in value.

Warranty work and servicing has been done just like a UK supplied car.  Dealers want your custom regardless of whether it's an import.

If you keep your car in really good nick it will sell itself at re-sale time.

If it is more than than 3 years old then there is really very little difference between a UK supplied or import, as both are out of warranty.

The main things to check for UK spec are

1. Spacesaver spare wheel (many imports have a puncture repair kit)
2. The alarm is full UK spec with internal alarm
3. Rear speakers (some imports just have front speakers - but not many reports of this)
4. Headlight settings (some Danish imports had the headlights set on like Volvos )

Have a look at the service book and see where the PDI was done and what the date was.  Check out the history.  Most imports are fine, but there were a few that had been stored for a year before being sold in the UK - Motorpoint and Motordepot were the sellers of these I believe  :undecided:

Check the VIN number and enter it into this website and you'll get some useful info :

http://www.abvwc.org.uk/vw_vin.htm

You get the full two years UK warranty from the date of the PDI stamp.  Check with VW UK that the car has been registered with them and they will be able to tell you how long the warranty has left, what servicing regime it is on etc....)

At the end of the day they are all built at the same factory so IMHO I would'nt let it put you off
