mK2 1.8 driver
« on: 10 May 2008, 22:31 »
Found a nice black 1.8 2 door low ish mile mk2 driver, ive got a mk3 8v GTi at the moment and have previousley owned a few mk2 GTis the plan is to sell the mk3 and with what i have left over get some wheels etc for it and then slam its ass on the deck, what i want to know is how far off the pace is the driver to a 8v gti mk2 and did the 1.8 have the nasty piersburg peice of poo carb.

tbh, I don't think there is much in it between a 8v GTi and a 1.8 Driver, maybe the fuel system is better managed on the GTi with the cosmetic trims etc

oh and 10mins away from me

22hp difference... is that going to make a difference to you? I think the GTi would have better fuel consumption anyway, my 1.6 is worse than the GTi's  :lipsrsealed:

The driver will be noticeably slower than the gti, that is a definite. If you're concerned about the gti performance then the most sensible option is to go for a gti, you can up the power of the driver with a gti head, cam, manifold, weber carb but that is all money that doesn't have to be spent.

As for the carb, pretty sure it is the Pierburg...

It's not this 1 on ebay is it?

I was just looking at that one and put off by the trailering it away  Otherwise it would have been perfect!

Just having a look through some of my old car mags.

Autocar gave out this info for the MK2 Golf GTI 8v..........

0-60  9.2
Top speed  115mph
MPG  35.7

And Auto Express gave out this info on the MK2 Golf 1.8 Driver......

0-60  10.5
Top speed  112mph
MPG  32.0

If you need any more info let me know as I have a heap of info on both in my old car mags. Got a load of mags dating from 1988-94.

Just a couple more questions dose any one know if the driver had the same gear box and anti roll bars as the gti. Also dose is the 1.6 gear box different to the 1.8 and if so dose it fit the 1.8.
