widow regulator / motor question
« on: 08 May 2008, 19:39 »
Ok

today driving back from the dealers after getting some others bits i needed, clips fopr the scuttle panel to be exact..

well, put the drivers window down, and snap, window drops to the bottom of the door, I knew it was the regulator as its been on its way out since i bought the car, sourced a new regulator and iv fitted it, all working fine but then after lots of working of the motor the button was intermittantly not doing anything, (this was just about 3 times before i decided to leave it for a bit) i thought "sh!t hope the motors not burnt out or something", so i feel the motor and its red hot....

iv now left it to cool down, does anyone else think it could be jsut because iv been working it hard and its got a bit warm?? and will be ok when cool again??

i had to operate it alot to make sure i had it perfectly working and in the runners right u see.

my next question is, does anyone know if its possible to change just the motor only, as i have the motor from my old regulator still, this is just incase i need to obviously

Yes, you can change the motor separately, its just a couple of torx screws and the spindle just come off the spined motor shaft.

How much did you pay for the new one if you don't mind me asking?
It if can't be achieved with brute force and ignorance, then the Haynes manual will have to be read!

yeah i already got the old one in bits abd hung onto the motor as a spare

i paid 50 for it matey, its not brand new but it dont look that old and its genuine vAG, got it from a place up here in leeds, new they are Very expensive, even for me and i get stuff at trade or near abouts...

bloody window goes up and down like a rocket now and super smooth , gonna work on the front passenger side next as since iv owned the car its been faulty, basically if you press the button for it,  it only goes up or down a couple of inch, so u have to keep pressing the butto to get it all the way down or up etc...very strange, so im now gonna investigate this and sort it

I read somewhere in the Haynes manual or somewhere (cant quite remember now) that the electric window system has some sort of automatic fuse system protecting it from overload so i if you overwork a motor then the switch will cut out for like a minute or so and then reset and start working again.

I found this out before fitting a new window regulator to mine as i was trying desperatley trying to shut the window overnight and it would only go up so far before stopping and going back down again i was trying loads of times to get the thing to shut and the switch would keep cutting out.

Cant explain why the motor was hot though, u just probably abused it like you said.

yes they have the safety feature on them incase someone leaves their hand in the way!! haha the window will go bacvk down, mine was doing this when fitting the reg, untill i got it all lined up right, this is why it got so warm haha

its totally fine now, the motor was RED hot, couldnt touch it it was so hot..

I think the safety system is fitted into the motor,  there is no relay or anything on the system but there is a thermal fuse on the top of the fuse box on the main feed and a smaller fuse for the secondary ignition feed.
