Hi thinking about getting a GTI 8v MK3 within the next few weeks.

I have a ford fiesta 1.3 at the moment .

I was just wondering what the fuel consumption is like on the GTI 8v how much does it cost to fill up?
Also all the cars i have seen are really high mileage, does this matter, do they start to lose it at high mileage?
Also what are they like in general? Do they pick up well? what are they like to drive?
What the top speeds some of you guys got out of them :P

Also if anyone has a decent one for sale around the milton keynes/ northampton area a 3fdoor that is message me.

I wouldn't bother with the 8v personally, go 16v all the way!

On mine It's upto £50-£60 for a tank, I get about 270-300 miles averaging around 28-38 mpg (town/motorway)

I bought mine for £900 with 85K last year, now upto 103K with no serious issues, oil leak, new alternator & have done the cambelt for good measure. Everything else I've done has been cosmetic/performance improvements!

Mileage goes hand in hand with good history, so as long as it's been serviced reguarly etc. you'll be fine.

MK3's are heavy cars, probably under-powered, the 8v is only 115bhp, 16v 150bhp, & the VR is 200bhp but they arn't slow cars, plus a couple of little extras will steal you some extra horses!

The book top speed for the 16v is 137mph, & I've had mine upto 130mph before, not at all scarey!

Whatever way you look at it's going to be an improvement over a 1.3 Fiesta, might cost you a little more to run but the benefits out way the negatives so go for it!!

Mine costs about £44 at the moment to fill and will do 300 ish miles to a tank.
It does 30mpg if you rag it a bit but if you nice it will even out about 35 especially on longer drives and down the motorway.

Not sure what they are like after high milage, mine only has 75 on the clock. Picks up well, especially after 3500rpm, but that may just be mine  

You should get somewhere in the region of 123 out of it, but think it depends on which fuel anf of course what you have in the car.

ive had the big bhp an all that , now i have an 8v. nowt wrong with it mate !  sure theres faster cars about .....but it picks up sound enough

Read through all the above so as not to repeat whats been said............

The mileage you will find on most will be 100k probably, but as someone said above, you'd expect paper work and stamps in the service book so you can see its been looked after etc, if its got all this AND you look after it yourself then go ahead and buy it.
My 16v has done 142k and ive only had it a month, so far loving it. I came from a 1.8 zetec escort gti and this is so much quicker and the brakes are like ten times better, the odd niggle on the escort like fuel gauge worked when it liked, non of that on my Golf, everything works spot on even though its done nearly twice the mileage of my old car.

I would get the 16v though, i mean theres virtually no price difference between the 16 and 8v i dont think, and insurance wouldnt be effected much i shouldnt think, just get some quotes from confused.com.

And petrol, mines obviously the 16v with a few mods so it should be over 160bhp and the fuel is about the same as my old standard escort gti 1.8(115bhp)

PEOPLE DONT BUY GOLF GTI's BECAUSE OF THE 0-60 TIME. They buy them because of the build and ride quality, because they have a vw badge on the front, and most importantly because they are great to drive.

In my opinion (and yes I’m just a well educated idiot) people who say “16v’s are miles better than 8v’s” have tiny microscopic little wieners in their trousers and believe that bashing on about a slow car that is marginally faster than another slow car will somehow maketh a man of them. Hmmm.

Why do people like you come & get personal when someone asks for people's advice about cars? I'm sure that you have a dick the size of a walnut but that doesn't mean you have to label others the same? No one said the 16V was 'better' just that it had more horse power, & too quote myself, I said all MK3's where too heavy but still great cars! May I be as so bold as to suggest you re-consider your approach to how you want to talk to people on here if you plan to stick around?!

Vr in the golfs is actually 174 bhp
16v is 145 to be exact haha they just round it off to 150

and yes the 8v isnt super fast but neither are the 16v, but they are all great cars in my opinion so alls good which ever you prefere.

had mine upto 130 and it felt very stable, i have just ticked over onto 93k miles in mine,  fuel consumption wise round town i see about 30 and on the motorway i see around 40, but this is driving briskly, if i drive at a steady 60 mph the MPG is very very good seen it rise to the late 40's

as long as the car has been looked after you will be fine in a mk 3 gti, look out for rust, especially on late models, door bottoms, above the windscreen and on tailgates, also look on the sills where the jack points are and on 2 door models check the sill area inside when u open the door, pull the rubber up and look, usually on the drivers side they rust, not good...
