You drove your car like that?

bought it like it, previous owner said it might be the CV joint, apparently he "wasnt very mechanically minded" although he managed to fit a 4 branch manifold ok

I don't think a semi will give the same results

While we are on the subject of subframes etc.  I managed to put my mk2 golf into a post. I changed the driver’s side front arm but the driver’s wheel is stilling sitting to far back.  I thought is may had been a bent chassis. Any Ideas how to tell if it is subframe or chassis damage or best left to the experts?

I crashed mine, but another will be coming soon....

Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Get your car right up in the air and have a bloody good look at it underneath.  If it's had a bang which has gone into the chassis rails you should be able to see ripples and distortion.  If you can see the wheel is further back than where it should be it may well be that you've bent the chassis, unless you can see the subframe has visibly moved, or is bent.  Again look over the subframe for visible distortion or ripples.  Paint that is flaking off is a dead giveaway, or clean metal.

If the panel gap on the wing to door get smaller top to bottom then that will also indicate chassis damage.

Giving it a good dose of looking at you really should be able to see any serious misalignment or bends.  It's not like it takes a rocket scientist to spot accident damage - it's hardly a black art.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

you could get the tape measure out and compare dimensions on the left and right? eg from centre of front wheel to back wheel on both sides

your very near me in the world ( wolvo/walsall ) theres a red golf being taken apart on ebay. hes in walsall i emailed about the whole car but the engine is wrecked and someone had bought the door already. he wanted £150 for the lot so i imagine the subframe will be beer money.

if u search ebay for mk2's the pic is the one poking its nose out of a garage ( red with single lamp grill )

Cheers dolly, but I think I'm going to go for this one in Bristol, it has all new arms and wishbones on half of which is already wrecked and we've drilled stuff out according to what we're gonna get with this new one.

Thanks alot though :) will keep it in mind incase we screw anything else up along the way !!

Looks like it's the chassis so right-off, anyone want to buy a 1.9 8v Big bore from www.theengineshop.info. with 10,000 miles on it. Gutted!

Looks like it's time to start a project up and use the engine, thanks for the help all
