Auto-headlights, mind of their own!
« on: 05 May 2008, 21:09 »
I have noticed that my headlights are coming on in full sun light when set to auto.  I noted advice from other threads that this maybe due to them coming on when doing over 90mph, but on my way back from 5s tonight in some lovely evening sunshine I noticed that they had come on again.  I had maybe got up to 60mph max on the journey.

I was wondering whether it was maybe a shadow being cast on the sensor, or perhaps the lights are supposed to come on when the sun is low in the sky.  I have checked the manual and do not see any mention of this though, mind you, nor do I see any mention of the lights coming on when doing over 90!

Think I will give a local dealer a phone tomorrow, get the latest ECU updates and see what happens then.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but will this update only be installed by the dealers if there is a problem?

yes dealer will check your chassis and engine codes to see if update is needed to your car, from memory its not all GTi's that needed this, earlier models were not effected.

Handbook 3.1

p56 - "The motorway function switches on the dipped headlights if the vehicle is driven at 140km/h for a few seconds. The dipped headlights are switched off if the vehicle is driven at 65km/h for a few minutes......

Hope this resolves any uncertainty?

I got my GTI from them too. I thought they were pretty good, certainly sorted the wind noise in the drivers door for me.
