Timing not adjustable
« on: 23 April 2004, 02:15 »
:D Hey people, I'm new here and am very impressed with the site content and how helpful u all r 2 each other.  Wish i'd come here sooner.  Sadly I had to part with my previous GTI, she was very tired but always made me smile, new owner who is a spanner whizz is gonna sort her out so at least i'll still see her.  I'm now the proud owner of another 83 campaign, black,  in mint condition with a GTI Engineering Silverstone engine, thats sadly a little tired also (only the head mind).

:'( The problem I have is that for the past month despite being typically tappety (very tappety), she's been going quite well, especially after 3 thousand revs, flies then (old high lifts).  But all of a sudden she devolped an idle speed problem where she'd sit at 2k +.  So for the time being I adjusted this.  This was follwed a few days later by the timing being way out, so it sounded. She was missing and had a severe lack of power.  I retarded ignition which solved the missing but that resulted in even less omph.  Few days later, same again.  The Dizzy seems to want to go round shed loads to keep her ticking over but its now as far back as it will go and still wants to go back more.  If I return to the orginal setting before the first problem she wont even start.  Car has lost all power and continually misses when cruising at any speed.  The leads are not in the wrong order.  I didnt do anything to it before now. the car has been dried stored from new and everything seems a little too dry.  no grease on anything. been on to it.  Is it possible the Cam belts slipped a tooth to cause my problem.  Heard that the tentioner can be dodge if dry.  Any help would be great.  8)

It's not unheard of........If it were me, I think the first thing I would do now is whip the timing belt cover off and check your tension and alignment. Let us know if you find anything wrong.........

Welcome aboard 8)

My timing belt cover has a hole in the side you can stick your finger in to check the belt tension.
I don't know if it's meant to, or if someone has put it there, but it is quite handy.

Are there two holes of similar size? Sounds like its your blanks for access to the alternator bolt

 8) Thanx for the welcomes and advice.  Stripped her down over the weekend Inc the belt cover.  Had a real **** of a day.  The pulleys were put on wrong making it look like the car was setup 180 out.  All the timing marks were wrong.  Also with the car not having a standard head I was a little puzzled as to what to do.  Had a friend give me a hand and we cracked on.  Took the cam cover off, set the bottom end to TDC and then removed cam belt (which was more slack than me grannies knickers!).  Turned camshaft till cylinder 1 valves were both in closed position and cylinder 4 was rocking.  Refitted cam belt after inspecting it, reset the tensioner and, ta da.  She flies again.  Well happy.  Seems like whoever did the cam belt change was a monkey.  Didn?t take up enough slack on the belt before doing up the tensioner.  Hence she had slipped 3 teeth! Just need to get me strobe to it to make perfect then should be 100%.   Still need to get the clearances done though.  I hate that tappet rattle.  Been told with high lifters it'll never be perfect but its awful now.  Why are the old 8v's so bad for that.  From new, they don?t seem to last long enough.
