Got a chipped windscreen this morning
« on: 02 May 2008, 09:30 »
The guy in front of me was driving like an arse (he was driving like he was drunk!) and was swerving all over the place down a very busy narrow road that's got banks either side of it, so I backed off and kept my distance.  Then the bellend swerved into the bank and kicked a load of crap into the air including a stone which cracked into my screen.

It's left 3 chips very close together in my direct line of vision so it's very annoying.  Autoglass are coming out next Tuesday to see if it can be repaired, but they warned me that because they are close together the screen may need to be replaced.  It doesn't bother me as long as I get the exact same screen as I have now, but how can I identify my windscreen?  Does it have a code on it somewhere?  I don't want just a standard piece of glass as a replacement, I want to ensure I get a like-for-like replacement.

you wont get a standard piece of glass, as all screens are manufactured for each car.  what you do need to check is the tint.  by giving them the model year you should get the correct one, just make sure you tell them your golf has rain sensors.

If your not sure what colour your tint is just hold a white piece of paper against it and look from the inside

Just had my screen replaced at local dealer. Should be no problem with the screen but I had major issues with the fitting and quality of the work. They used an independent windscreen fitter and my car was left damaged:

-External rubber windscreen trim strips either side was punctured/left rippled - both since replaced

-Exterior paintwork/screen/lights had black sealant smeared on them - you need to get this off the paint quickly as it sets fecking hard

-Exterior windscreen wiper arms scratched - both since replaced

-Interior remote wiper sensor was marked when it was levered off and windscreen fitting transfer was fogged/looked crap (referred to as a gel pack which comes with a new screen - make sure this is properly fitted without air bubbles on the screen prior to the sensor going back on) - since replaced

In fairness to dealer, they attended to all issues without question. Glad it was all done under warranty and not done at my home. I picked my car up in the rain so didn't see anything wrong until the next day. Worth insisting that you inspect the car indoors prior to taking it away. My screen was de-laminating but I probably wouldn't have gone through the hassle if I'd known what was coming

Now just got to get my roof sorted after an overspray nightmare (later, much later............................................)

Need to chill now and have a few Friday beers. Typing this has got my BP up again

After some squabbling I managed to get the screen replaced as Autoglass said my insurer wouldn't replace the screen normally as the chips I had were very small (my case was that they were in my direct line of vision and I played on it a bit and said it was "dangerous", tsk).

The guy seems to have done a good job.  I can't drive it for an hour or wash it for 3 days (gutted, wanted to give it a good clean before going out on Saturday).  I'll be paranoid listening out for unusual wind noise from now on!  And I must be the only person in Britain hoping it rains so I can check to make sure the censor is still working fine
