Im trying to find 2 tyres for my ed30, I have dunlop sportmax's all round, now what are the implications of changing both rear tyres to a different brand, as the front 2 still have a good 6mm left on them.I dont wanna have the sportmax's tbh and have had better experiance with Bridgestones RE050.
will it give me handling issues by using 2 different types of tyre brand?

As long as the same brand tyres are on the same axle I can't see it being a problem.

....I've got the same question - I have Goodyear F1's all round but will need 2 new tyres before August which will be free under my Maintenance Plan. I won't be able to get all 4 for free because the other 2 won't be worn enough to qualify. So I am wondering if I can mix by having F1's on one axle and new F1 assymetrics on the other axle. Does anyone know. please?

VW's advice is always to fit matching tyres on the same axle. They don't mention different makes between axles. I would have thought that as long as you have decent grip before the tyre change it shouldn't alter too much after. Fitting new tyres at the front and having nearly worn tyres on the rear will make the back end loose and could cause a spin in the wet if you pushed it. If you do have well worn tyres on the rear then I'd personally get the wheels swapped over so the new ones are on the rear and then change the fronts as soon as grip becomes an issue. If there isn't much in it and the rears look fairly new, I'd leave them as they are.

I would say that as long as the same tyres are on the same axle it shoulddnt pose to many problems, particulary since high quality tyres are being used front and back.
If you were to use, for example, GSD3's (Eagle F1's) on the front and some ditch finders on the rear it would make a very unstable car and easy to oversteer. The other aspect that would be good to consider is the difference in tyre size between different brands. Toyo for 1 are particulary small whislt Verdestein are quite large, this could possibly up-set the balance of the car....
I would say that most of us would not be skilled enough to tell much difference between different patterens front and rear unless a cheep tyre is being used.

....I've just come off the phone to Goodyear's tech dept and it's perfectly safe to mix 'normal' F1's with their new Assymetric F1's on the GTI. The newer Assymetrics should be on the rear while the normal F1's should be on the front driven wheels until they need replacement -
Yippeeeee!!!!
You should never mix them on an AWD R32!!

As long as you don't do what I did, and replace one blown tyre on the front with a new one... so I had one new tyre and one older one on the front axle. This caused my car to pull right on acceleration. Once I swapped the rears to front, it was fine again.
