Hi,
     can someone help? Where can I find information or can someone tell me how to replace the water pump in the correct way on a 94 golf gti 2.0l 16v. I have a good idea how to do it but just wanted a few pointers before i started. Also changing belts..

Drain the coolant via the hose attached to the thermostat housing.
Remove the alternator.
Remove the power steering pump, shouldn't need to disconnect the hoses.
If you've got aircon you will need to remove the compressor and turn it out of the way, don't disconnect the hoses.
Remove the pulley from the water pump.
Remove the alternator bracket.
Remove the other hose.
Unscrew the bolts securing the coolant pump and thermostat housing to the block and remove the whole lot.
Recover the sealing ring between the housing and the block. Get a new one for refitting.
Depends whether you have bought just a new pump or a new pump and thermostat housing. If you only have the pump you need to unscrew the pump from the housing and fit the new one with a new gasket.
Refitting is the reverse of the above, but you will obviously need to refill the system with the correct coolant and water.

I suggest you buy the Haynes manual which will give you all the details needed, well worth the money.

Well done the water pump and new thermo aswell. Came to bleeding the system and we seem to have some serious airlocks somewhere. I cant stop the car from overheating and have tried everything.
The car worked fine before we changed the water pump.. no overheating, fans kicked in as they should etc etc. Change the water pump and it wont stop getting hot....arrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!

Any ideas anyone as we have been at this for hours now and gettin really stressed.

just wondering why you changed the pump in the first place. Was it overheating to start with? :nerd:

bearings went in it mate and car sounded like a train. At least we got rid of the horrible noise it was making.

I had exactly the same problem on my GTI after i fitted a new gearbox... So i scrapped the car and broke it for parts  :grin:
They are a pain to bleed but i did my 1.8L engine which is exactly the same as far as cooling goes and that got the air out in 10 mins or so.  So im not sure if my GTI had a problem or was just being a pain in the butt,   it takes lots of pipe squeezing,  If that bottom rad pipe aint getting hot... u  got to keep sqeezing air out and alternating the revs between idle and 2500,  Oh and dont forget you MUST keep that inside blower on full heat all the time to prevent it boiling over, thats all that will keep your cylinder block from boiling up.

Try taking the top rad hose off and using a hose pipe to fill it up,  then squeeze the bubbles out of that using the bottom rad hose while its disconected,  then fill the expansion tank with a constant flow from a hose pipe and while its flooding out the conector on the head quickly push the pipe on, then give the bottom rad hose a squeeze again.  Also make sure the heater matrix pipes are not full of air,  i disconected the hose from the bottom of the filler tank and used a hose to pump water into it, then vented it out of the bottom rad hose, but do that before what i just said.  else you will empty your rad again.

And if that doesnt work, buy a ford.  :laugh:
