DSG gear changes - comparison
« on: 29 April 2008, 11:39 »
I have been looking at a few youtube video's of DSG changes - now to me it seems there can sometimes be some differences in the speed of the shift.

Let me try and explain....

Compare http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Afzh91rics&feature=related to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-MAD19BFVw&feature=related.  The shifts in the first video seem sharp and what you would normally experience, the shifts in the second video although still fast just dont seems as instant, i.e the revs dont seems to jump back as quick as in the first video.

My question to you DSG owners is how are your changes compared to these videos?   I think you would only tend to see the slightly slower change when the pedal is to the metal  so when you next get chance give it some welly and see how yours behaves.

The speed of the DSG gearchange is directly dependant upon the load that is being put through it at the time. The DSG box uses wet plate clutches with the clutch oil under pressure. This pressure determines the speed that the plates can clamp together - the higher the pressure, the quicker the clutch/gears can engage. So, it stands to reason that if the pressure of the oil is constant, the gearchanges are slightly slower under a higher load. :nerd:
Some companies have had the gonads to re-programme the oil pressure in the DSG box and therefore increase the clamping power and the speed of the changes, but the only ones I can remember are in Germany - Those mad Krauts

I suppose it would explain it to a degree, I notice on occasion (when engine it hot, say over 30mins) that if I manually say at 5.5/6k then it doesnt always change as quick, the rev needles doesnt jolt to the lower revs when changed.  Like I said I have noticed this only on occasion as other times it will burp and change as 'normal'.

Its like a slower rev drop almost.

Sorry so what are you getting at exactly?

Although if you went to the trouble of making a video and putting on the net I would expect it to be on a flatish surface.

I always thought that the DSG box learns your driving style????

If this was the case, and all you did is thrash your car every day all day long then I would assume the car with a thrashed box would change a lot quicker than one that has been used normally because the thrashed box is used to be changed quickly and hard???? Don't quote me though, might be wrong?
