Hello, First Golf! Noob from Essex.
« on: 28 April 2008, 11:13 »
Hi everyone, I'm John, lived in essex all my long years, had a mate when I was younger who had a Golf GTi Mk1 which I always liked.  Always had a hankering for one but never got round to getting one.....Until now!
Anyway I bought one from evilbay a few weeks ago for £405 and i'm well chuffed with it.  Its a 1990 1.6 Golf Driver with 61,000 on the clock and only two previous owners :nerd:  No rot or rust but does have one small dent in the rear and a few small scrapes and parking pin dents
Its taken a bit of cleaning but its starting to look good now.
This is how it was when I got it:

And its a bit tidier now:

Actually better than that now as it had a real good polish everywhere and all the trim blacked again.  Wanted a 5 door for the kids

I have some questions:
I want to fit a set of Ronal Turbo alloys to it.  These come with two different offsets, 28 and 37.  Which one do I need for my model to go over standard brakes etc with 205/50x15 tyres on and wheres the best place to buy a set with tyres, online or local?
Secondly, I'd like a better interior, mine is minty condition but it doesnt hold you in very well and could do with an upgrade.  Whats the easiest interior upgrade (seats and doorcards) to get/look out for?
Cheers

Well so far its had two new outer headlights, a new retractable wing aerial, and what a mammoth job changing that turned out to be  , a new stereo as the old one was knackered, a new dipstick guide.....broken  and 2 days worth of cleaning and polishing.  I'll try to get some more pics sometime as it looks so much better now than even the second pic shows.  Gathering parts up to give it a major service hopefully next weekend and if my other car goes on Wednesday, as its supposed to as a deposit for it has been left, then I will be ordering up a set of Ronal Turbo alloys and tyres for it hopefully in time for the weekend as well
Other plans include a GTi rear spoiler for it and hopefully a GTi Recaro interior if I can find a good one close enough.  Might need a new exhaust at some point soon as this one seems to be on its last legs
