Reg plate location?
« on: 27 April 2008, 20:04 »
Anyone know if it is legal to have the registration on the bonnet as a vinyl strip rather than have it as a plate on the front of the car?

I saw Regal's car at the spring festival and it had its reg number on the front of the bonnet which freed up the front of the car nicely.

look here http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/v796.pdf

they need to follow those requirements, and also need to be able to be seen face on

ps, is it because you spotted those mountless numberplate GTi fronts on ebay ?

heres the regs on placement (and i think these will be the ones to get you in trouble if the law see fit to go that far)

 (3) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed -

      (a) vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practicable,

      (b) in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are easily distinguishable from every part of a relevant area having the diagonal length specified in paragraph (4).

I dont think it technically is legal, but you can get away with it.  A mate of mine had an old mini with the a vinyl numberplate on the bonnet and it was fine.  however that was a classic car and if you have a space for it on a modern car, such as the GTI, then you might not get away with it.  those Alfa's get away with not mounting in the middle, but thats about it.

too much of a risk if you ask me, it would be obvious on the GTI too if not in the normal place so would draw attention to it.

Then again it is just as bad as the pressed german style plates and people gamble with those.

....The potential problem is not so much the question of getting pulled just because of the bonnet 'plate' but if you are stopped by the police for something else - Even just a standard roadside check - You are likely to get the offence added to whatever else. On the GTI it clearly is breaking the law to have your only number 'plate' on the bonnet.

I reckon too thats really pushing it with the old bill. Besides it would cover about £50 worth of CF

Just get a 3/4 sized one  they look fab

Or maybe its time to create discrete plate flipper that flips out during normal running but hides away behind an OE looking flap when reqd

You could even have the other 'sides' of the spinning plate as show plates 'HURDY' or blank

 Ive just lost the plot

That's just it. I was wondering about a CF front section and removing the reg mount, so I'd just be revealing one part and covering another

plus you would then end up with screw hole where the old number plate was unless you are going to replace it with more carbon fibre.
