Oil leak woes & "VW Specialist"
« on: 25 April 2008, 17:11 »
So my cars has a pretty bad oil leak, really bad in fact, coming from the lower pulley seal.

Was in with a local specialist last year to have an oil leak fixed which was diagnosed as a cheap aftermarket filter with no pressure release valve (as the OEM ones do) which knackered the oil pressure sensor & caused the leak. Forked out a wad to have that fixed plus £Â£Ã‚£ to have the cambelt done, all this back in November.

Low & behold the car has been continuously leaking oil since, the odd drop here & there, but being into VW's I think nothing much of it & one house move & small front ender later start to pay a little more attention...

So this leak is more like the car taking a piss once the engines up to temp. so decide to have it looked at, was going to fix it myself as I thought it was the sump seal but realised it was a little more involved. Local "specialist" that did the cambelt wanted, wait for it, £360 to fix the leak & do the belt again.

WTF! So a £50 tensioner, £25 belt & a £10 seal making the labour £275!!! I had a barney over the phone detailing both my admiration of their warped imagination & the likelyhood of me handing over the best part of £400. By the end of the call he had decided that perhaps after only 5 months driving a new tensioner might not be neccesary & the 7 hours labor might be slightly over estimated & reduced to £250 for the whole lot, not bad, by just questioning him he wiped out £110! :smug:

I suggested that as a repeat customer, whom they had recieved a fair share of business (more than the cars worth) off me over the past 12 months that they might consider re-considering, considering ( ) the labor involved was all but the same for both jobs, even openly admitting they have to remove the belt to get to the damned seal!

Another call back, best we can do is £212 & I quote "take it or leave it".... take if or fcuking leave it! I'm a pissing customer! I should be screaming at you for not fixing the oil leak when you did the cam first time round you insignificant little bag of pond slime!

So, service dept. at my local VW stealership had already done one for the weekend leaving me with no chance of extracting a quote off  of their lovely sounding but intellectually inept receptionist as it's "too complicated to do" because the computer doesn't list the job. Ring the local garage, who admittedly arn't as glamorous as the specialist but are a nice family run place with tonnes of adwards etc. etc. & they quoted £140+VAT using OEM parts same as the specialist but only 3 hours labor as "it's the same work involved". FANTASTIC!

FFS I wanted to cram the cambelt where the sun don't shine! Had the slimey git answered the phone when I tried to ring & cancel my slot for next week I would of told him so as well!

Thank you for listening, good night, god bless, fcukers! :afro:

The guy set up back in the 70's, went to Wolfsbury & got his certificates then came back to Lichfield & setup shop to as he'd seen how much work was doing through a VW scrappy owned by an old guy called Eddie. Really nice chap who used to know Beetles inside out & backwards, did all the work for eveyone & ran the most user-friendly scrapyard in the world! Anyway this young no-it-all, Mac, charged the earth & was only ever in it for the money...

Shame really, anyway, as 'new' VW's came out with diagnostic computers etc. he stopped doing aircooled - too much like hard work!

Oh well, will look for a better 'specialist' to go pester I think!

You could just try and find a realy good local mechanic, just a small friendly set up ! I think some pepole call them selves specialists but arent realy any better than a good, experiance'd, honest mechanic who works on what ever comes his way.

Anyone familiar with MidlandVW? The website's not quite there yet but they look pretty good from what I've seen?

Can anyone recommend them?
