16V Misfire when hot
« on: 20 April 2004, 17:14 »
Ive been driving my 16V for all of two days, but last night as I was pulling in to my road it started to misfire, so I decided to take it round the block and see if it sorted itself out... it just got worse until I thought it may not make it, barely any power and kicking me in the back it was that jerky.

turned it off and on again and it started and seemed to cure the problem.

Drove it around this morning and the misfire came back, but only when the engine gets hot, then I just have to take it easy on the poor old dear and it goes away after a while. Any ideas? Ive got 135k on the clock!

I'd love to help mate, but unfortunately my car knowledge stretches to changing thermostat and lots of polishing!

VR6 seems to be a bit of a genius with all things VW if you're anywhere near surrey I'd check him out  ;)

Ok, will bear that in mind when i go back to uni in egham; on the outskirts of surrey, but still surrey

In the mean time, anyone have any ideas? Apart from leads arcing or something, what could be going wrong with the fuel line when it gets hot? (Or stop it from sparking)

I doubt it is fuel, as the car misfires, more likely to be ignition.
Try changing the ht leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm for starters.
If that doesn't cure it then have a closer look at the coil and dizzy.
