What to do....?
« on: 23 April 2008, 18:10 »
So iv had my R32 for a few weeks but cant exactly say iv driven it much although i have been keeping my eye on the interwebs for some bits and pieces for it. Basically iv got a bit of extra cash and my choices are:
-iPhone 16gb (cost £400 here in gib)
-Nikon D80 SLR Camera
-Bits for the R32

Iv been looking at the following:
-Miltek Cat Back http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/store/product.php?xProd=6821&xSec=152
-Pipercross Panel Filter http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/store/product.php?xProd=8066&xSec=530
-Haldex Gen 2 http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/store/product.php?xProd=7990&xSec=158
-Short Shifter http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/store/product.php?xProd=8046&xSec=158

Now my questions are what difference would the piper cross filter make? Is it just a new filter that would slip into the box, im not expecting any perfomance gains for £28 but was sort of hoping it would make the car sound that little bit better.
Thanks to few of you here i sort of know more or less what i need to do know about the miltek so no questions about that.
The haldex gen 2...would i notice a difference once i have this on? I read some where about a switch too? Any one know what the ratio is between the front and rear? I beleive at the moment its 70% Front and 30% Rear, i was hoping for something abit more agressive maybe?
The short shifter...is it really worth £125? Again...would there be any noticeable difference?

Thanks for reading and look forward to your replies....

don't get the iphone. A new version is coming out in June, that's why they are on sale, to get rid of old stock!

I would get the Digital SLR. Photographs are mementos of treasured moments in your life and the D80 is a really good camera. I'm a Canon fan myself but I have heard really good things about the D80:

I'd go with the Gen 2 and the short shifter  :nerd:

The cat back will do bugg3r all for the power, but looks and sounds a little meatier.
The panel filter will give you a minute amount of throttle response extra to what you already have in abundance with the V6 and so is a good to have, but not essential.

-Miltek Cat Back - From a sound point of view I would say there is no need. If your looking for more power and possible remaps then i would say go for it!!

-Pipercross Panel Filter - not sure exactly what this is supposed to offer? I know its cheap, but is it pointless cheap??

-Haldex Gen 2 - Now this one i am mot too sure about. have heard quite a few different things about this as an option but for me swithching the power to the rears to make it more aggresive would be great for straightline speed.... but through the corners i think the car is setup in an ideal way i.e. power set to the wheel that needs it. This is one thing I wouldnt want to f*%k about with.

-Short Shifter - I thought you had opted for the DSG?? no??

R32UK...the cars manual hence why i asked about the short shifter (duh xD)....is it something which is easy to fit or smething i would need to ask the dealers to do? Think i might go for the short shifter and the haldex now, possibly the pipercross too and then just before summer go for the milltek....182_blue i think the Haldex controls the amount of power being shifted to the front and rear wheels and controls how the power is shifted...i think though, i am not 100% sure, im sure some one else would know abit better

It's basically a differential system using an electronic coupler or clutch which engages a secondary axle and splits the drive between the front and rear in non permanent 4WD systems.

Also found this link for a Haldex Performance Controller here - no experience of it though:

Agree with the comments about the Nikon DSLR - your budget may stretch to a D200 if you shop around or buy nearly new.

I think you might want to look into the haldex controller in a little bit more detail before you make the plunge.. Having a tail happy R32 could land you in quite a bit of trouble. Remember the current set up is the way it is to counter the weight leading you into a hedge... messing with this would require you to have quite alot of driving skill... but i guess its down to your driving style.

As for the short shifter - I did look into this quite alot when i first got the R and found the gear change to be a little notchy. This however was just down to me being used to a lazy gear change from prev car. Now everything has settled down i find the manual has an awsome gear change, it just takes a bit of time to master

I've driven a gen2 haldex equipped car, it does have a switch next to the ESP button so you can put it back to stock. In my opinion it isn't worth the money unless you do track days. Money would be better spent on a remap.
Go have a look at davefish's blog on the r32oc for his views on the haldex, and then see JayB's report on his customcode.. you'll see the light
I'm trying to get an evoms induction kit over from the states at the moment, will let you know how that goes.
