Key woes
« on: 23 April 2008, 13:46 »
I had trouble getting into my car earlier, I think it's just a case of the battery in the unit being dead, but the sodding thing wouldn't unlock and when I did it the old fashioned way by turning the key the alarm went off!

When I got to work I was able to lock and unlock the car by pressing the buttons, but the little light on the unit doesn't appear to be lighting up when I press a button.

Is this just a case of the battery needing to be replaced?  If so, is it best to take it to VW to do or  just order the battery and do it myself?

Sounds probable it's the battery but depends how long since new/last battery.

I had this problem recently and VW tried to charge for a replacement battery (even though I had already done that myself!!)

In the end they replaced the key fob under warrenty

I had this about a year ago.  Couldn't figure out what it was as the car was only 12 months old and thought the battery going flat in that time was strange.  Anyway, found out that if you unlock the door, you have about 10-15 seconds to put the key in the ignition and start the car before the alarm goes off.  Went to the dealer, paid for a new battery which they fitted for free.  Then had to re-establish the link between the key and the car for the remote central locking.  Can't remember off the top off my head but is covered in the manual.

I tried my spare fob and everything seems ok, 100% certain the battery is dead in the other one.  Hopefully VW won't extract the urine when I ask them to swap the battery for a new one...

Cheers for that, but I got it booked in on Monday to be sorted out.  We tried a new battery at the VW dealers, but it's the fob that's knackered and they are replacing it for me.
