Crankshaft removal

My 35 Day Ban Project Thread

Towards the bottom you'll see a picture of the crank, on the right side of the picture you'll see two 17mm bolts which i'm having major trouble unfastening, as it says in the thread.

Anyone know of a way to get these little buggers off?

Cheers

Russ

What exactly is the problem? Have you not got enough room for a socket? Is the wall of the socket to thick to clear the obstacle?
If this is the case, then ask some one who has some snap-on sockets as these are very strong and thin walled, and would easily go in there.
I also believe Halfords do a good quality range of sockets that are also thin walled. Try one of those.

The way I look at it is that it went on there, so it has to come off.  :undecided: There will be a socket that goes on there and it won't be a special tool that only VW have and that will cost you half a months wages if they are willing to sell it. I have this socket but I don't live in the UK, otherwise I would lend it to you.
Make sure you use a good quality one as cheap inferior ones will split. Halfords proffesional range I think are also guarranteed for life. So if it breaks, chuck it back at them and explain what it is you are doing.
