Im smoking.......
« on: 21 April 2008, 13:06 »
Fitted my brembo max discs and greenstuff pads, pull up to shops and get out and my brakes are smoking, presume this is them wearing of the top of the pad, was the first time they were pressed.

How long will they take to wear in? They are pretty rapid already and ive only had them on for like less than a mile.

mike you should brake steady for the first 100 miles to bed them in......and the smoking could be grease buring off? just keep your eyes on it as you dont want fire

Did you clean the brake discs with brake cleaner after you fitted them. A lot of discs have a coating of something oily to stop them rusting whilst they're on the shelf.
This will cause crap braking, and possibly smoking whilst it burns off.
Read the bedding in instructions for the discs and the pads, some you have to do some braking from 30 to 0 and 70 to 30 to bed them in properly. Can't remember the specifics on Green Stuff pads.

Cheers

Paul

Sounds like you have exactly the same set up as myself.  You get the groved discs on the front?  Like a star shape?

My ones never smoked as far as I could tell, but they did squeel like a whore.

Apparently your meant to be quite hard on new brakes, but I wasn't.  Mine ended up squeeling for about 2 months, but are perfect now.

Go for a bit of a drive, (a few miles), and keep the window down so you can smell smoke etc.

As Bradley said, fire/overheating will warp the brand new brakes.

regarding running new discs in.... when i first worked in the trade we were told everybody to brake gently for the first 100 or so miles but there is debate on wether braking hard bed's them down quicker/better.....
and remembering green pads..dont they have a film covering to bed them down sooner..and this needs buring off which is what i think the smell is? I did sell ebc stuff but they have changed them loads i did..

they aint smoking now, but still make a nice smell, lol. Brake pretty well, but the first push of the brakes is awful, then once u push a bit harder is good, guess i will go easy on them for a bit, baring in mind i have good front tyres and brakes, and awful rear tyres and brakes.....
