Knock, knock knocking...
« on: 21 April 2008, 12:55 »
Right over the last few weeks the my car has developed a knock in low gears when putting on or letting off the throttle.  Car is a 2.0 8v..... It does it the worst when its starting and and turning off.  The sound is similar to when you corner on a worn driveshaft.  I could avoid it before by being really smooth with the clutch/throttle etc but now it just doesnt help!  Ive eliminated the exhaust and really dont think its engine mounts.  Im not going to run it untill whatever it is dies either!lol  Any suggestions guys? Cheers

Look at wishbone mounts. If worn they will move forward relative to the car when you set off or accelerate hard, when you take off power they will move backwards due to engine braking. This can result in knocking. Also if very worn the tyre will rub on the bodywork in the wheel arch. To check, get a mate to watch for movement of the wheel (relative to the body) whilst you let the clutch in sharply to take up the drive.

have a look also at the suspension. A mate had his suspension loose on his  :sick:escort  and he had knocking sounds everytime he accelerated, braked and turned.

Agreed, sounds like suspension.  I had something similar a few months ago.  took it to a garage and they put it up on a ramp,  turned out to be a broken drop link and a missing bolt on the front suspension. Cost 50 quid for them to sort.

Cheers. I have checked all these things. The car does it when not moving and is worse at idle when the engine is cold and everything is shaking around a bit more.  Seems to be getting worse also....

Exactly wot i was gonna say!!! Check the engine mounts...

Open yor bonnet, sit inside and with the handbrake on slowly release the clutch in first gear... if you see the engine lift at the front then the front mounts gone and if it lifts from the rear then it's the rear mount.
