Hmm ive been googling this problem, seems to be a lot of posts but not a lot of answers but your not the only one with this error thats for sure. The most help i can give is this post here:

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=14446

Even though there are no answers he mentions taking it VW and them wanting money to replace "it" (i guess he means the dials) judging by his next comment he wants to know how to remove them.

This post seems to mention strange things happening with the dials as well as the error:

http://forum.performancevwmag.com/viewtopic.php?p=249364&sid=2f5fa8797a53e393fff9f9dad480c1ba

Another one:

There was one more link i found in french which i translated and the guy said he has the same problem and he phoned "VAG" and they could not tell him what the error meant.

Gonna be a tough one to figure out by yourself i think. Might be worth buying a vag com diagnostics lead and plugging it in to see if there are any fault codes logged.

Vag com isn't capable of reading faults with the clocks as there is no controller for any dashboard displays. I seem to recall there being a battery in the clocks, chances are that has died meaning the memory deletes itself every time you switch the car off. Have you noticed the mileage going up as normal? Pretty easy to get hold of a set of new clocks to just replace them though and it's dead simple to do

woah! easy! Take the clocks out first and just check that the white plug in the back is in correctly. Rule out simple fre fizes first!
