Engine noise
« on: 21 April 2008, 10:36 »
Hi all,

Might be nothing but what do your Gti engines sound like on tick over? Mine sounds reallt tappety. From inside the car it almost sounds like a diesel.

Could this be because of the induction kit?

Once i rev the engine it sounds fine just on tick over. Ive never heard another GTi engine before so havent got anything to compare it too.

Should I be concerned??

Cheers  :undecided:

Some people say they sound like a oil burner on tick over!  I dont think its anything to worry about.

ha ha - same here,  sounds like a dirty diesel.  My neighbour has a diesel X5 and the GTI drowns it out   Couldn't believe it when I heard a MK5 GTi for the first time but seemed to be the case will all the subsequent GTI's I looked at, although I don't remember the 2.0TFSI on an A3 sounding as loud (maybe it has better sound deadening in the engine bay)

Its due to the direct injection and loads of other things, perfectly normal... Go have a listen to another gti... Evo's also "suffer" from it for example.

Both of my GTI's have sounded a bit tappety. Best description is a ticking rather than tapping noise (if that makes sense?) Might also be worth checking your oil as mine needed topping up after 400 miles

Not sure about a diesel sound, as the mrs Jetta TDI 140 DOES sound like a tractor!!
