Starter motor problems (update) SOTRED !!!!!
« on: 21 April 2008, 09:10 »
I have a problem with the starter motor on my 91 8V, when I try and start the car it just clicks once and then does nothing every time I turn the key, the battery is fine and well charged. I have a spare starter motor that I took off the car because it started just turning the engine for a split second and then diss-engaging as if it had started the car. Is it possible to sort one of the two motors out or to make one good one from the two motors or am I better off just getting a new one and binning both the one on the car and the spare one  :undecided:

try cleaning the connection between the starter and solenoid, its a thin wire which slips onto the starter motor via a spade connector, could be corroded causing the solenoid to engage but no starter motor

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Odds are solenoid, as above, clean up the terminals or re-crimp.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and advice, this morning I've taken my spare motor apart and given it all a good clean and re-grease so I'm hoping if I put that one in it will be O.K then I can take the one thats on the car and sticking apart and have a go at sorting that one out.

Matt, thats exactly what I was going to do and when I went to the garage this morning the f@cker started up as sweet as a nut  ? F@cking cars

Good luck with the bottom bolt !!!
Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music.

Well what complete waste of time and effort that was   :angry::evil:  I put the rebuilt starter motor on and it just spun, it wouldnt engage at all. To make matters worse I cant even swap the solenoids round because I cant get the one that does engage off the starter, the three screws might as well be welded in ! What a complete c#nt, it looks as though I've got two starter motors that are both w@nker'ed and I cant even make one good one out of the pair ! 8vRicey, the bottom bolt was a bit of b@stard but I just put the jack under the gearbox and made it f@ck up then the bolt just slipped in, just a shame I'll have to do it all again.   Thats it for today, I've had enough and I dont have a shred of patience left, I'm at the point where I'm thinking f@ck it I'll just blow the pile of sh!t up ! I'll probably end doing what I should have done from the start, get a new motor ! Oh well I've got a car that wont start and tomorow as well as working out what to do about a starter I'm gonna change the sump gasket, gearbox and engine oil, I must be sh!t nuts !

Rant over, happy days
