drove a 240bhp SEAT Leon Cupra on track....
« on: 20 April 2008, 21:34 »
Had a trackday experience to use up at Knockhill and part of it is getting up to speed in a 240bhp SEAT Leon Cupra before driving single seater and a Legend (both bike powered).
With my 30 on order I was interested to see how its brother felt on track as I intend to do the odd day till i get a track car again. I know Knockhill like the back of my hand so was able to push the car from the start. To help get peeps up to speed the instructor request you use 3 & 4th gears including the hairpin - which I felt would probably be better in 2nd. Had to do what he said so had a go using 3 & 4th and you were able to get decent drive out the corner without lighting up the inside front under power (makes sense from their tyre bill perspective!) The brakes were fairly strong although there were indications of their hard life they lead with vibration from probably uneven pad material build-up or a warped disk.
Did feel gutted for the guy getting his Ferrari experience in a 360 when I passed him on the main straight either the 360 was restricted or he was a very nervous driver

So came away looking forward to getting the 30 on track (when it comes) although you do seem to loose some of the on throttle adjustability - think some left foot braking would sort that. Only slight concern will be the brakes think some decent pads and fluid would be the way forward. I think with a remap the car will be quick and maybe using a higher gear will be the way forward to keep the loads through the front tyres manageable.

For those that may get an experience gift thing - go for the Legend race car - they may look a bit weird but they are very adjustable and way more engaging than the single seater even with a limiter on them! The bike engine and gear box make it fun too with really quick no clutch upshifts (up there with a DSG)

Depends on your specific gift the basic single seater/Legends experience is:
3 laps you driving in the Seat with instructor next to you - (you get scored for smooth, accurate driving)
You then get 2 demo laps in the Seat, the instructor will show you what to do in the first lap and what not to do in the second - idea is to scare you into behaving when you are out on your own.
Then you get strapped into either the Legend or the Single seater - you get 7 laps both cars engines are restricted so the Seat and the other cars all have a similar potential lap time although the wind on your helmet makes them feel faster!
You can buy extra laps (another 7 for 40 quid or something like that) in the same type of car or the other type.

There is also a Legends unlimited which is more expensive but you get 120bhp instead of the restricted 50bhp. The legend is so much fun in the corners restricted but it must be mental without the restriction!
