Stranded! Lumpy at idle and cuts out!
« on: 20 April 2008, 18:09 »
Drove the golf as per usual this morning to my parents, came to leave about half hour ago and it's all lumpy and it cuts out on me....I had just put about £7 worth of petrol in as it was running low but I am totally confused as to why it's doing this?! I had a play with the throttle cable and moved it but it got "stuck" and was revving high (!!) so had to switch off via ignition. I did manage to drive it round the block and it was ok until I came to a junction or a stop where it idled odd so had to keep revs up to prevent cutting out.
Now it starts but really doesn't want to rev very much at all and cuts out each time...

RAC on their way....

Any ideas appreciated, it's really confused me!

mine tends to do this too until its warmed up. can be just driving down the road when its cold and when i put the clutch in the revs drop and it cuts out. starts straight back up though. mines a KR engine.

It sounds like your timing has thrown a wobbly for some reason, but unusual for it to happen suddenly, unless the clamp bolt on the dizzy is loose.
Have you driven through a large puddle lately? You could have wet ignition leads or distributor.

mine tends to do it whatever the weather really. i only got the car around 2 months ago and it hasnt been built up too long really. the engines only been in it since december time. its got a 2.0 block so the previous owner told me. and the 1.8 head.

Thanks for the replies guys, RAC man came out and managed to get the car to drive (not very willingly) but it would possibly appear that the half a jerry can of "fuel" I put in could have infact been water! And I then put another 5 litres of petrol in to the car...(which was petrol!)

He drained the fuel tank and lines and then we put 10 litres of petrol in again. We now seem to have another prob as the car now won't "spark" and the fuel lines don't prime and so no petrol getting through, so injectors not injecting.

Car is being towed to the garage this morning...(hopefully a simple/quick fix?!)
