Edition 30 Problem .... or normal ?
« on: 19 April 2008, 13:10 »
My Ed 30 now has the huge total of 650 miles on it .... and I need a bit of advice as to whether there may be a slight problem with it or not !

I will try to explain but it's one of those things easier to 'feel' in some ways than explain.....

There is a slight feeling through the steering and car generally of - for want of a better term - the road surface.  You can feel the changes of tarmac through the steering wheel and can even feel slightly rough very low level vibes through the handbrake as well if you put your hand on it.  There is nothing through the seats or anything extreme - just a 'rough' feeling generally through the drivetrain.

The tyre pressures are spot on and the car goes fine otherwise.  The tyres are at 38psi/2.6 bar (as it says on the label by the fuel filler) and the car arrived with Michelin Pilot's on it .... 'Exalto' I think it says on them.

Is this just a trait of the low profile tyres and suspension set up ?   or are everybody else's cars silky smooth ?

I am used to cars with tyre noise and low profile tyres / sports suspension - but have not had quite this in a car ..... then again is it just as it is so new and not really settled in yet ?

 Any comments welcome......

I think you're best bet is to go for a ride in another ED30, if you know anyone nearby, and compare.  Where do you live ?

IMO all GTi' & ED30 have this trait to some extent - hence all the numerous comments on rattles and vibrations within the cabin.

I have Michelin Exaltos on my ED30 and run them at 33psi front and 31psi back, much less than VW advise but about the same as what Michelin advise.  I hav'nt experienced any worse vibration than my previous GTi which ran on on Conti Sports, in fact I was pleasantly surprised with the comfort & ride quality after hopping straight from my old GTi to the new ED30 last October.

You could try dropping your pressures a bit and see if this helps.  Other things to try are swapping your wheels round, front to rear, to see if you have a rogue wheel /unbalanced tyre at the front.

Pressure sounds a bit high imo, i wouldnt go higher than 35 myself, but they do tend to pick up road conditions and pass them on to the driver, i was suprised how rough the golf was, probably as bad if not worse than my lowered with 19" alloys and 35 profile tyred Focus ST

I also find the cabin quite noisy especially from the exhaust when you back off etc
