Silver Gti scratches
« on: 18 April 2008, 14:15 »
Hi all

I'm a bit of a long-time lurker here and had nothing interesting to post until now...

Recently, when I was in a petrol station, I scrubbed off some bird sh!t from the bonnet of my Silver Mk V Gti stupidly and without thinking using some of the paper that is there for drying your hands. Now that it's dried, there are obvious scratches (but not down to black under the paint). How the heck can I get rid of these?? It's really annoying me!!

Also, has anyone any experience of using a touch-up pen?? The mrs scraped the side of the car very slightly just in front of the front wheel and it has removed some of the paint in a stretch about an inch long (vertically) on the corner where the panel flattens just before the wheel arch.

Thanks muchly!!

If you cant feel the scratch with your finger nail then chances are it will machine polish out.  If you dont have access to a machine polisher try meguires scratch x.  If you can feel it then some of the pro detailers touch them up, wet sand and polish out but you really need to know what you're doing.  Worst case, "some" chips away have a very good reputation.  It is a franchise though so can be a bit hit or miss

I've recently taken delivery of the highly rated (5* Auto Express) Mer Scratch and Stonechip Removal Kit. And I must say I'm very impressed.
You get a demonstration video with the product which is excellent, it shows just how easy it is to sort scratches and chips regardless of how deep they are.
Although it's not recommended for scratches with dents.
I've used it already and the results are awsome
Best £30 ive ever spent. I ordered it online direct from Mer.
( I don't work for Mer by the way)

To get rid of bird poop, I first soak it with Meguiars Quik Detailer to loosen it up, give it a min or two to soak in, then wipe it off with a microfibre cloth. If you leave it on it wil etch your paint. Like posted, earlier, if you cant catch your fingertip on the scratch its probably just on your clearcoat and will polish/buff out fairly easily.

Dont worry, your car will look as good as new with a little care
