However, we are not talking about 'nice' cars, were talking about GTI's and if you think a 150 bhp valver is not much quicker than a 115 8 v then Im afraid you have either not driven one, or didn't take it past 4k rpm as you were used to your 8v running out of puff......

I was not trying to be a no-it-all, as its all down to preference and they are only opinions....

dude my best mate has a mk 3 valver,  and i know how to f**kin drive a 16v car, thats what i grew up on and thats what my jap car is!!!  i drive mk 3 16v s Allllllll the time also, now his must be a bad one then as their really is not much in it between that and my 8v...now im not saying my 8v is fast, because its not when i compair it to my jap car, but what im saying is theirs deffo not much in it against his 16v.. on the motorway the 16v does not leave the 8v behind as u would expect, go try this, get a 8v and 16v side by side and see for yourself...maybe my mates isnt a fast 16v and maybe mine is a healty 8v, i dunno?? but theirs deffo not alot in it, now i really dont care which is the fastest, my 8v was not purchased for speed and i dont care whos is the fastest, i really dont and i need to stress this, iv never once said the 8v is fast..

it will however fly with the 1.8t lump in it, not that ill drive it fast...my golf is my work horse, its the crew car for my club events, reliable and presentable and i can leave it outside nightclubs without been scared about it getting smashed up etc like i would be with my other car..

i guess im just sick of the school yard arguments about golfs hahaha

in my view you came accross a tad wrong in your original post, but your second post was a little better, the best thing for us to do is leave it at this

thread modified to keep things friendly (and save it from being deleted by the super mod's!)..... now play nicely boys!!

oh and I prefer the 8v to the 16v..its the lazy way you can drive them unlike the 16v which all though miles faster you need to give them some to make them go.... and the 8v compares well to its rivals at the time..........remember the astra mk3 sri 2.0/ excort mk5 xr3i and the 306 2.0xsi (ok the last one was quite good but made from paper mache!!)

Ladies, ladies - leave the handbags at dawn to Mini One drivers. Best car? - overall Mk3 has to be up there, along with a few others. My own view

Best looking - not by a long way - bland eurobox thing. Try a 1960s Lancia Aurelia Spyder in red...
Best performing - er no - obviously. The wife's knackered old daihatsu charade turbo is nearly as quick
Best built -  Not to bad I admit. 16v too rev happy for me - I prefer low down torque
Best economy - OK for engine size
Best handling - Yes, not bad with gas struts, decent coils and tyres.
Best practicality - pretty good I find. I like the way the rear folds down flat, load of space, quality interior build, decent front seats.
Best residual - VW badge adds a few hundred

Overall, advantages outweigh dis-advantages for me, but it all clearly depends how much emphasis you put on each category.

Boney having to Mod in here! Unheard of!

Personally I have a Mk 3 because its a good compromise! Good amount of room, good load carrying capacity. Goes well and feels good to drive.
Put it this way I have been happy to spend a lot of money on mine!
The only other Golf I would have is a Mk5 R32, but cant afford/justify a 3rd car atm.

It will never be the best or the perfect car and yes there are tons of faster cars, but I like mine and thats all that counts!

I love the MK3 golf - we all do which is why were in this section after all!!! lol

the original thread was saying how he thought the mk3 was the arguably the best golf of the lot!!! which we all know depends what you want from it as they are all so different - but then it went into a slanging match and then like all golf threads turned into a 8v VS 16v thread!!!! lol how often does that happen....

I would say now - if money wasn't the issue then the mk5 has to top them all doesn't it?

you won't get more reliable, great interior with the tartan seats, quickest one out there without mods, looks? in edition 30 spec

i thought you didnt like the mk 5 as it looked like any other european box hahahaha...

ed30's are fantastic

and just for the record i wasnt making it a 8 v 16 thread, i was mearly pointing out your attitude in your first point came accross wrong

no biggie...but (and i mean this in general and not direct at you) i hate other dub owners slagging off other dubs, at times the vag scene can be so arsey, just no need at all

couldn't agree more... I like the banter though tbh, all we ever hear from the mk2 boys is about how heavy the mk3 is and the like and how ugly it is.... they love mk3's really!!!! ha ha

remember a thread on clubgti a while ago about how mk2's we amazing because you can lift the front wheel from the jacking point and the back wheels lifts off.... well guess what my mk3 does without any rear seats and carpet? umm hum....
