Check for vacuum leaks around the carb.

worth giving the carb a clean out with carb cleaner......
if this doesnt cure the problem it will sure as hell help to make it run better........

I've not idea how similar a driver is to a GTI, I'm guessing you'll not have any of the sensors etc as it's a carb engine ....

best thing to do next is get a service kit for your carb - remove it / clean it and replace all the consumables just so you can rule out any vacuum leaks. The kit will only cost ?20 or so ...

is it the peirburg carb? if so just ditch it for a webber, if its already a webber then service it and get it setup properly by a garage
