dasboard problem

my golf 1.8i cabriolet has a problem with the mile counter.
the miles do not go up and neither does the manual trip counter on the speedo.
the trip counter on the mfa works but the mpg does not.
also the speedo works other wise i would of immediatly suspected the speedo cable.
any idears to try would be gratefully apreciated.
also if anyone knows a good but not too expensive mechanic in brighton area (and a breakers for some other parts) please let me know as i need to get a new clutch put in.

sorry i cant help with the techy stuff but theres a big breakers just off the a23 at pease pottage called billy bridges - they had a caddy last week, might still be there always loads of mark 2s .  i use a garage in copthorne that are very good with the older dubs but might be a bit too far for u???

thanks vixter will look at the breakers, need a few bits for tidying up. rear bumper and maybe original alloys. will look and see where copthorne is if its not too far may go there

Take the dash out and remove the speedo, in it you will see a threaded screw that turns a small cog for the trip/odometer. It sounds like this is not making contact.

thanks adam will have a look and see, would this also be the reason the mfa says i am getting 99.9mpg or is this another fault?.

The MFA would probably be another fault, they seem to be a law unto themselves and account for no end of enquires and problems. I'm pretty sure they are not interlinked as the Speedo is an independant unit, and purely mechanical, not electronic.
