Unleaded 95 or 98 RON MPG Question
« on: 11 April 2008, 21:18 »
Ok so I have 2 choices where I live. Unleaded which is 95 RON and Super Unleaded which is 98 RON. Unleaded is 79 pence per litre where as super unleaded is 91 pence per litre.
I usually fill up with normal unleaded and the car seems ok (and its lasting me a lot more than my Audi S4 did!!!), but from a few threads I have read it seems that people are getting more mileage using super.
Can someone explain this with comparison to costs per mile using both fuels? I cant feel any difference, I filled the car today with super and blasted it around for a while but it feels exactly the same.
I would have thought that the car would use the same amount of fuel for each mile, just produce more HP/TQ doing so? Perhaps its due to being more efficient and using less fuel to travel the same distance?

Ok now I'm confused lol!!

i think it takes the ecu about 200+ miles to adapt to the new petrol, so you should see the benefit after your second tank

The car will take a few miles to adjust to the super unleaded. The Tfsi engine needs superunleaded to run at its most efficient both in terms of performance and economy. Check inside your petrol flap, its states superunleaded is required

Ive been informed that the FSI *technology* runs much more economical, powerful and smoother on higher octane fuel?

Can't find the link to the information etc but it seemed pretty true.

Can't give you any figures with the GTI as I've run it exclusively on Shell V Power (Optimax) since new. I did a comparison on my old Boxster which had 15k miles when I bought it. Got 23-24 on regular unleaded around the doors and and got 26-27 on Optimax. Use a tankful of each for a comparison and try to adopt the same route/driving style for a worthwhile comparison. Do the math and then decide. Ordinary unleaded is fine for every day driving but I like to use the best fuel I can for the car - overall performance and fuel consumption is fine for me.

Oh, and I definitely get more to the gallon from V-Power, plus it does feel quicker and smoother. Got caught a bit short a few months back and had to put standard supermarket cr*p in and the car ran quite lumpy

I'm taking the GTI to the big suspension bridge in Millau southern France that was on Top Gear, and want to get the best mileage I can.
