No Power To Main Beam Plug
« on: 16 April 2004, 21:36 »
Now... well wiring problem ...

I am not getting any power to the MAIN BEAM plug on the passenger side headlight.

Side lights - Ok
Dipped - Ok
Main beam - Only drivers side.

Now.. i checked the plug that plugs into the unit (cos at first i thought it was the headlight unit was faulty) but the plug didnt have any power to it. (should have 12v).

Then I tested (with a multi-meter) the conenction near the bonnet catch (looks like a distributor cap ... cylindrical) ... that has many pins inside... the cable from the headlight unit goes to a pin .. that pin has no power.

Now ... another interesting thing.

The headlights I put in came with a "BRIDGE" for the relay circuit.

The instructions say - and I quote.

Pull the relay from position 10 on the central component board and insert bridge provided. Then re-insert plug into position 10.

Now my car doesnt have a relay in position 10 ... but it has a bridge (small piece of copper bridging to parts together).

Now.. why? ... wheres my relay gone?

... I might be wrong but is there another electrical box on the mk3? Im looking under the steering columb at the moment and "position 10" is about the FOGS not the headlights.

Is this the reason my main beam aint working? ...

(PS This is in VW related but I think its better here I cut bits out tho from the other post this is JUST about the power prob)

Yes I think theres a fuse for the main beam, high & low ... one for each I think ... but wouldnt that affect both lights???

As for the switch.. do u mean the actual stork?

btw, the little blue MAIN BEAM light on the dash used to work with the old standard headlights but not anymore? .. but im sure the new headlights are ok ... not positive...

The headlights are fused separately, as in fuse for dip l/h and r/h, main l/h and r/h (so four fuses). Did you check the fuses strange how you have lost the main beam indicator.

B4 I went out on the piss I discovered some interesting stuff.

A: The relay Hella mention in the instructions is for SWEDISH/CANADIEN cars only as they require lights "on" on start-up.

B: The jumper I have instead of the relay keeps dipped beam on whilst main beam is on... cos its illegal to have no dipped whilst main beam is on and an MOT failure.

C: I didnt realise left and right beam had a fuse each ... I thought one fuse controlled main beam ... both of em.

So, I'll check the fuse tomorrow and replace it ... hopefully it'll be problem solved.

D: The little blue light on the dash ... maybe its just coincidence and the bulb has gone? ... dunno yet  ???

It was the fuse for the passenger headlight  ::)

I thought one fuse controlled both left & right ... dammit ... panicking over nothing  >:(

PS: The little blue dash main beam light came back on with the fuse was replaced ... weird huh?  ???
