So think ive found one!
« on: 10 April 2008, 13:10 »
Its a 3 door Clipper. So Ive got a few questions for you....

1) It has a '16v kr' engine in it, is that a GTI engine and is it good?

2) It has been converted to a 5 stud, is that a worthwhile conversion and can you get decent looking 5 stud wheels on a MK1?

3) it has no seats, headlights or stearing wheel and has a good vinyl roof and apart from a few scabs has not rust or rot underneath.  It also needs a new fuel pump.  The guy wants £400 for it what do you guys recon? I dont have any info on how many miles its done at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

Lee

if its a 16v kr its a good base, is the engine running and complete, is he using an aftermarket ecu or got a decent stainless exhaust manifold as the 16v conversions require a different manifold.

the 5 stud conversion on the rear is easy, just change to 5 stud drums i think but not sure what they have done for the front, may have used a 5 stud stub axle or used completely different hubs

im guessing no tax and mot but people normally ask 250-400 for the 16v engine alone with the appropriate stainless steel manifold so if you get a cabby for free you cant complain

haggle your arse off tho mate some people might tell you to f**k off but still at least you've tested the water, but if it looks like a good project get it and get stuck in fella :D

seats/headlights you can get cheap, might be looking at a fair whack to get a set of proper mint original cab seats or a leather setup tho, if interior has been stripped out you could end up spending a small fortune on the little bits to make it complete

are you looking for a long term project, resto or just a cheap daily?

Just spoke to the fella again and hes said that he doesn't know how the hubs were converted.  He says it has a after market four branch manifold and the exhaust is upswept scorpion.

He also says it has a mk2 dash in it that has been chopped (this has put me off to be honest) and he said he would do it again because it doesnt look right.  It has no door cards but has all the rest of the interior.  Im pretty put off by the converted dash, I obviously wanted a MK1 and don't know if id be able to take it back to standard.

Think I might walk away now actualy

Oh and yes mate I am looking for a project but nothing that is going to require major overhauling because I dont have a drive or a garage

best walking away lad, you can get decent cabbys with tax and mot for sub 1000 pounds that will need small tlc and plus you have the bonus of being able to keep it legally on the road (if you get a car with no tax and keep it outside your gaff it might get towed)

is it the blue one of e38? it defo worth the punt! you can get a mk 1 dash fairly easy plus you can convert it back to four stud fairly easily! if you after 15 alloys then being 5 stud will be a problem as your bbs splits and oz turbos etc generally come in 4*100 pcd but then again you can pick up bbs splits oz turbos etc oin 5*100 pcd! the interior was sold from it mate plus the rally front end! he was only selling it for 1200 all together but you get to put your own stamp on the car so i think its worth it! and you know the shell good plus the car still has mot so techinally you can tax it! i think you should fella but hey if your not happy i would walk away!
