8v gti to 16v passat
« on: 08 April 2008, 12:30 »
im talking hard core engine conversions. i just want to get a few things straight.

I have an 84 gti, with multiple engine failures. at the wreckers is a 1991 16v passat. is this 16v passat engine compatible with the engine bay of my 8v, ie will it drop straight in? or do i need to realign engine mounts? will my gearbox bolt straight on to the side of it? most important of all, is there anyone out there who has done this?

cheers, Evan.

Get the motor and all the ancilliaries and although you'll need to do some splicing with the wiring it should all bolt up pretty easy.  Keep the gearbox that's on the Passat - the ratios are designed to work and feel right with the engine.  There should be a cable-change gearbox, so make sure you get the shifter and cables, too (you might want to convert to a cable clutch if it's not got one.  Oh and get the exhaust down to the end of the downpipe, too as the flanges on the manifold to the head are differently spaced.

That sort of vintage Passat should be running K-jet, so should be compatible with your pressure pump.  You also want to grab the brake master cylinder and hubs and discs - big front brakes that will rein the 16V enthusiasm in properly!

While it's a far deal of work it's not a serious engine conversion - it's just spanner spinning .
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

use a mk2 16v gearbox to simplify things, the ratios are fine

you will need the entire engine loom from the back of the fusebox, most of it plugs straight in!

16v gearbox aye.. does that have shorter gears than the passat? what about the head? the head of a passat musn't be very gti-ish. im guessing a 16v gti head would bolt straight on? or maybe just the cams from a gti..

ill give the guy an email and ask for some photos. hes got a few up there so i should be able to get everything..

now theres the problem of getting it certified :undecided:

Stick with the golf gearbox, saves arsing around switching to cable change and hydraulic clutch.

Also the ratios are better, my passat has uber long 4th and 5th for economy, not so fun for ragging.
