I just bought one of those diagnostic leads from eGay and run it up in vag-com it came back with quite a few error codes which i have listed below:

VAG-COM Version: Release  311.2-N

   Controller: 037 906 024 BE
   Component: DIGIFANT 3.2        1953
2 Faults Found:
00525 - Oxygen Sensor (G39)
            03-00 - No Signal
00513 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
            27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
Readiness: N/A

            16-00 - Signal Outside Specifications

00287 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor: Rear Right (G44)

Address 25     -------------------------------------------------------

   Component: IMMO VWZ3Z0T2358765 V00
   Coding: 09600
   Shop #: WSC 00000
No fault code found.

End   -------------------------------------------------------

I think the most serious of these is the "00513 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)" which is probably the reason the car wont start. I was thinking of clicking on the "Clear all DTCs" button to clear the errors (i think thats what it does) and then trying to start the car again. Will this give me a better idea of the fault as im worried some of these are old faults that were never cleared, do you think this would work and do you think that the engine speed sensor is likely to be my problem (original thread here: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=81906.0 )

test it again afet a few miles and the see what shows up... all old codes could be stored if they wern't erased and all the cars i've done a fault check on have had less errors after the second read.

the problem is the codes could be old..

but this code 00513 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
            27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
could be just the wires and worth checking... otherwise its a new sensor (crank angle sensor is common name) and this is located behind the front engine mount under the oil filter housing and the other means a lambda sensor issue and an m.o.t place can test this.

oh and it sounds like you've got a faulty abs sensor too!! again check when it runs ok and if the fault reappears

Hi,
Error 0513 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28)
            27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Thats the engine speed sensor, had the same problem recently VW wanted £150 for the part I bought the GSF one and its fine.
If you have the budget for it I would get the seimens part from eurocarparts for approx £70 as thats the same one as the genuine VW. I only realised after I took the old one off.
Simple to change as well, just need to take off the front engine mount and starter bolts.

If the wires are bare on one part of the sensor cable, then chances are they'll be knackered all the way down...I had to replace my sensor 'cos every time i stripped of the outer casing, all i found were bare wires...

Cheers dude, without u mentioning the engine mount and starter bolts i would of had no idea how to get the f##er out. Took me long enough as it was, cant see any odvious defects but im gonna change it.

Where is the quickest place i can get one?

mate - i know the non starter will be your biggest concern atm but I would do that abs sensor sharpish too.

MK3's have no brake bias - they rely on the ABS to not overload the rears so they are pretty important.

good luck with the ESS...

Cheers dude. It was the speed sensort in the end :D Its now running and idling better than it used to!

As for the ABS issues, i think they are old errors that need to be cleared however the software i have got will not clear them.
