Hey y'all

NEED HELP!!!  :sad:

Gearbox just shat itself when droppin from 3rd to 2nd on a roundabout at approx 30-40mph  :cry:

Few questions:

1.  Is the GTi box different to other models, i.e is it close ratio?  is it available on any other model of mk3?

2.  I'ev heard that mk3 golfs are hard on gearboxes, any truth?

3.  What sorta price am I lookin at to replace it, I do all my own work btw...

Depends what age you car is? What engine and gear box code it is? 8v? 16v?

Soz, forgot to mention that,  she's a '97 8v GTi  havent a clue bout the gearbox code, happened on my way to work this evening and havent had a chance to nosey in round her properly

I can select gears, move a couple of yard and then clunk!! she almost stops, clutch out there is a bad rattling noise, clutch in it disappears, thought at first clutch, but when she selects gears and tries to move im thinkin gearbox

i think you can use any 8v box, there is about 4 different ones, or a 1.8 box.

Maybe even a 16v box as i think sum1 fitted a 16v box by accident on here, so cant be too different. Ratios on the 1.8 and gti 8v are nearly the same i think.

Cheers man,

went home last night and got the good old Haynes Manual out last night says my gearbag should be an 020 with DHQ letters, also seen that basically any 020 will fit,  now to find one!!

Go into the classifieds section on this forum, and theres loads of braking Mk3's. Most will have an ok box ;)

the 1.8/2.0 8v and some diesels use the 020 box.... the ratios in 3/4&5th are different (closer) on the 1.8 and longer on the diesel
they will all fit tho....

Ok, have just been told that a diesel gearbox will only fit if I change the clutch plate and flywheel, is this true?  :undecided:
