R32, that was one of the symptons I had, the steering went really heavy on lock, almost felt like flat front tyres, then lightened up as the wheels come back towards straight on.

The last thing I wanted was to have to take it to a dealer. I have resisted doing so since it went in for the creeking door seals and came back with the cabin covered in some white cack. So now I have to have them look at the steering rack, temp sensor, and rear door alignment. They wanted the car for 4 days to look at the temp sensor... they are gonna want it for 2 weeks if I give it to them for that lot!!!

I agree R32, most stealers are a complete waste of time and generally the car is in for much longer than it is truely needed and always ends up with marks/damage that wasn't there before! Like you though mine has to go in and is going in tomorrow and I'm hoping they can decided what is needed same day so I can have the car back and rebook once the parts are in. I'm also going to take my digital camera and take a few shots of the alloys and along the side profile of the car, ask the dealer to verify the condition of the car as very good!

It's such a shame we have to go to these lengths, however I have yet to meet a dealer that really cares about our £25/30k cars :angry:

I know exactyl what you mean!!! the last time I got my car back it was in such a mess i vowed never to take it back to those knob jockeys again. They even managed to get me angry about the way they parked it. The drivers door was 6 inches from another car... and you could clearly see marks on the other car where my door had been opened.  :angry:

Just been out in the car today and low and behold, no noise!!!! :shocked:

It's booked in tomorrow to be investigated!!!

Question is, the niose was more obvious during our recent hot spell we had down in the South where temperatures were averaging about 16??? Would the steering rack be effecting by temperature as it doesn't have fluid, just works on an electric motor???

The reason I say the temperature thingy is today the average temperature is, cold!

Could temperature really having a bearing on the steering issue? :rolleyes:

I’ve just noticed a very slight creaking when parking the car, subtle... not grinding... more of a ticky sound... it that makes sense.

UPDATE,

Been to dealer today and they are 99.9% sure it's not the steering rack as common faults if it is the rack are;

Mainly makes a long grinding niose when on left lock, noise sounds central in the engine bay and steering can appear heavy when on left lock.

My symptoms are light ticking niose when turning from left lock to right lock, intermitent, sometimes makes a scraping sound that goes away if foot placed on brake, VW diagnose replacement strut mounts will sort this???? :undecided:

I went on and on about the rack and they wouldn't budge as they didn't think mine had the right niose!!!! Must admit I went to a good dealer who spent a lot of time on the car and even located the noise by placing their hands on top of the strut mounts where they found it made the clicking niose, common fault apparently that can sometimes be mistaken for the rack??? :undecided:

Not sure myself and feel this won't be my only visit to sort this out somehow???
