TOP 3 TYRES
« on: 01 April 2008, 15:18 »
Hey All,

I am looking at replacing all 4 tyres next month and wanted to know what you lot are using on your GTI's. I have used Eagle F1's on my old A3 and they were awesome especially in the wet. What would be in your opinion/experience the Top 3 tyres with the best at No 1? They will be wrapped on 18" Monza II's

Cheers,

Ryan

Just had a pair of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric's fitted this morning.

They came top in the recent EVO tyre test.

Feel ok so far. Quieter that the Conti Sport 2s. Too new to fully report yet though.

Got them from here for a good price:-

The Vredstein Ultrac Sessanta came out 2nd with very good ride/feel.
Bye Bye Edition 30

Got the PS2's on the GTI and my M3.  They are good, but I have used F1 GS-D3's extensively and I feel they are the better tyre,  but obviously supplies are getting low, and it is the same with the PS2, production is ceasing and some of the larger sizes are now non existent, will try the Goodyear Asymmetrics next time round.

Also found the Potenza RE 050's good on the GTI,
05 GTI DSG, Steel Grey,Monzas,Xenons,Leather etc.,  SOLD

Im finding my eagle F1's (gsd3) extreamely noisy, do you think they might be too hard or have i got a wheel bearing on the way out? im running about 35psi all round!

Dunlop SportMaxx also very noisy

I have 18" wheels and the company didn't even acknowledge, let alone answer my email of complaint - dealer sat on fence and didn't report anything adverse at first service :undecided:

Have to say other than that no real complaints - wear and both wet/dry grip OK. Sidewall protection also very good. My Monza II's are still pristine after 18 months :smug:

I can recommend Pirelli P Zero Rosso's from my previous GTI's and Boxster but they don't appear to feature too high in recent tyre tests.

IMHO, track testing doesn't represent real world road experience, so find a good tyre supplier/fitter and take their advice

Agree with you there ... and interestingly EVO did do a subjective road test in their tyre test last year on the Golf GTI

and the tyre that won this by quite some margin was ..... the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta

EVO Tyre Test - Subjective Road Route Test (25mins on mix of surfaces)
The tyres were driven blind on a MkV Golf GTI

1. Vredestein 100%
2. Dunlop 92.5%
3. Michelin 90.5%
4. Pirelli 89.4%
5. Goodyear 88.9%
6. Bridgestone 88.1%
7. Kumho 87.0%
8. Continental 86.5%
9. Yokohama 76.2%
