Too low?
« on: 31 March 2008, 20:11 »
Hiya, been having some problems with rubbing. Mainly when im going a wee bit fast round corners or even slight bends, or if i go over a hump in the road. It makes a really nasty scratchy noise . It makes me feel sick

I am conserned  :undecided:, now the car has 19's on and is lowered on coils 30mm.

Do you think its too low? This has been the reaction so far. Or is it just a dampner/shoddy spring issue?

I dont know what to do but i know the noise definatly gives me the NO feeling

what width and offset are your wheels?

the MK5 needs an offset for aftermarket wheels of 42-45mm on 8-8.5" wheels

if the offset is for instance 35 (a common offset) then the wheels are going to be 10mm nearer your arch and most likely the cause of the rubbing

Rosie....
The rubbing you are experiencing could be due to a few things.
1. Your new wheels could have the wrong off set ie. ET 45 or less (smaller ET number = wheels stick out further) OEM is ET51
2. Wrong springs or wrongly installed springs (did you have a 4 wheel alignment done)
3. A combination of the above.

In the morning check your tyres or get a tyre shop to check them very carefully inside edge as well, as you might have damaged the tyres.

Brian g..... OEM Monza II's are 7.5" x 18" with an ET51 offset with a 225/40/18 tyre
If you put on (like I have) 8" x 19" ET50 (BBS CH's) with a 235/35/19 tyre you outside edge will be 14mm further out.
And thats without the extra 10mm in tyre width....
If Rosie has a 8.5" x 19" ET 45 those wheels will stick out by 25mm and thats not with the extra tyre width...

Hope this helps

Guess you've learnt the hard way Rosie. You say you have no idea about these things
Why not follow through your mods and find out as much info as possible before spending your money,
its part of the fun and real easy. Use lessons learnt from other people and dont believe what all the garage/shops tell you  most are just salesman wanting to sell you their product. Good that you are using forums though as you can find out loads and as you know get the best advise.
Many people just check the bolt alignment when purchasing wheels and disregard the offset & width :lipsrsealed: When I first started modding I done the same :embarassed:
I guess by your username you are female (which is no excuse). Look at Vicky BH. My girl is self taught and has rebuilt her beetle ground up herself and it's looking the dogs
Hope this helps

simple answer......if its the front wheels scrubbing then run your fingers along the inside of the arch and you should feel a large screw holding the inner of the arch in. this 1 screw will be what is scrubbing, if you take out the screw and tuck the plastic behind the hole for the screw then this SHOULD stop all scrubbing!! i had the same problem but now its fine.

i doubt you will have been sold the wrong offset wheels.

....Well said!

Too many people tinker with their suspension setup without knowing what they are doing! I'm a 'girl' when it comes to such things myself but I always consult very experienced experts. Actual handling behaviour is far more important than 'the look' when it comes to suspension.

And always get your wheels professionally laser tracked afterwards! Yes, I know it all costs money but your tyres and wheels are all you've got in contact with the road.

I am a girl but thats not to say i know less than your average car driver. My problem is i jumped in with both feet without fully researching or understanding what would be happening with the car. I did these mods in the 1st couple of weeks of having the car and have now learnt my lesson. Honest gov!

I really dont mind spending that bit extra money to get the car performing properly and safly, its totally worth it. But i do hate to pay twice for things, i know that this time its my own fault for not researching this properly.

Thanks for the advice etc and i promise i will be a good girl from now on
