right, 1984 k-jet 8v gti, leaking oil. actually its more like a gushing torrent of oil. ive tracked it down to the gasket of the oil cooler/filter and the block. heres a photo.

its coming from the indent above the left-most mounting allanscrew, right in the middle of the circle. after about 30 seconds of running the oil starts flowing. its a steady flow and results in a drip from under the car every 4 seconds at idle. the face of both surfaces in question are nice and smooth and free of any dents or channels. i have tried everything to do with the gasket.. new ones, ones made from thick gasket paper, liquid gasket, liquid gasket with extra thick paper gasket etc. i changed the oil filter. and the o-ring between the oil cooler and the mounting bracket thing that its connected to. ive run out of ideas. except getting a new motor. and sending it to a mechanic.. anyone got any better ideas? is the block known to crack in this area? its been leaking for about 2 weeks. it didnt slowly start leaking either, it just starting pouring out one day.

Thanks, Evan.

I take it you checked both mounting faces to see they were flat - run a flat edge with a feeler gauge underneath to check for uneven-ness. Might be worth inspecting the oil lines to make sure they aren't blocked (breathers etc.), have you inspected the oil cooler to make sure the oil is passing through properly?

Thats all I could picture it to be, its unlikely to be a crack.

oil pouring out like that could be due to a blockage in the pipe from the rocker cover to the air intake, check all those parts are cleaned up and your vaccum hoses are all in the correct places.
