I'm also assuming G60 mounts will be stronger than the 8v GTi mounts?

Not sure why the focus on G60 parts. Its an 8v so buy normal top mounts. The only reason the G60 top mount is different, and iirc is the same part from the 16v, is because the front of the G60 and 16v are heavier than the 8v because of the supercharger and 16v head respectively.

So really you just need the standard top mounts and not worry about G60 top mounts.

the suggestion has always been to use g60 mounts though... as they are beefier!

I don't think a semi will give the same results

It's not a difficult job but you must be careful when compressin the spring. Firstly undo the 2 bolts holding the strut to the hub. Then undo the top nut on the mount... i used a spark plug socket with a combined spanner section along with a allen key... Once undone the strut will drop out. To take the mount off you will have to get some spring compressors and compress them with care and caution. Once the mount has enough slack then you undo the strut nut. This needs a special tool but i got round it using a old VW hollow wheel brace and cut off pieces to make the notches to fit on nut. This will release the mount and re-fittin is the reverse of wot you done.

I recommend using Genuine VW mounts as aftermarket always wear out and it will be a pain to keep replacing them... besides you'll have to keep doing your wheel alignment everytime you remove the struts.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but how much should I expect to pay for new g60 mounts from a dealer?
I got quoted £57 I think (including nasty nasty vat)
Does this seem about right?
