the torx, cant remeber how sizes work with those, but afaik theyre the same size head as the gti's possibly.. tis not a very olarge bit, it was about 6 or 7mm iirc, i know tyhats not the right number though lol.. will find out later for you though
as far as locking off the engine goes.. why are you removing the big bolt for the pulley? theres 4 little allen key bolts holdign the alt pully to the crank, and then the big bolt? but, eitherway crank pulley bolt and those 4, on mine were tight as funk. impact gun is the only real way because of the limited manouvre space down there.
as far as timing, its pretty basic, as far as i can tell but i have only watched my mates do it, and put white amrks on my pulleys. but i figure you could put the pistons to TDC with head off, and mark the bottom pulley, and then use the cam cover with the timing arrow marked in the plastic, to -put the cam to the right position, for a rough guide? and then you use the dizzy degree timing.
