She's ill
« on: 26 March 2008, 20:59 »
Well it all started shortley after I installed a new steel water pipe in my mk2 gti 8v, the pipe replacment went swimmingley but shortley afterwards I noticed my power steering went well a bit wrong with it cutting in and out when it wanted to whitch I was dissapointed, further more my brakes have gone slack with there being more travel before they stop the car, the only thing I can see to be wrong is theres a black disc type thing on the top of the engine with a small pipe going into the top of the engine where that pipe enters the engine the rubber bung that seals it has well gone to the place of lost things were many of my possesions have ended up, my reves a jumping as a result but I dont know what that bung is called so im struggling to get another.  My main concern is the power steering as when im turning a corner it turns off making it hard for me to turn then all of a sudden shes back causing me to jolt, any ideas are more than welcome as im running out of fresh underwear

oh oh forgot to mention the water pumps leaking slightly.

The pipe coming from the top of the rocker cover is the engine breather, and you need to get that sorted as your mixture will get very lean. As for the power steering, check the condition of the power steering pump drive belt and make sure it is not loose. Also, have a peek at the power steering fluid level. It could be low.
the brakes, well look at the brake servo connection hose. That will connect either into the induction system of the injector, or the inlet manifold. (Can't remember which) Make sure it is connected.

Like darn said, sort out the breather bung that'll cause problems with you're idling. I've seen some on ebay in the past otherwise go scrappy or VW, shouldn't cost much.

As for the power steering, sounds like your fluid maybe low... I know when it's low it'll judder a bit and sometimes lock up in a turn. Do not overfill thou.

The coolant leaking from the water pump is probably getting on to the belt causing it to slip.......! Tightening it may not help much.

That's my thoughts as well. Had the same thing in the past. Brakes sound like a vacum issue so probably servo related. Disc thingy is a PCV which stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilator it's very important for the safe and reliable running of the car.
