PD150 or 1.8t...

That is the question.


I'll be selling the mk2 at the end of the year to buy a mk4, either the PD150 or a 20VT...

I'll be 19 with 3 years NCB and I've been quoted about £1250-£1300 for a year's insurance standard and about £1500 with alloys, lowered and exhaust/induction.



Now I really don't do many miles at all - Maybe.. 6-7k a year? And that would be pushing it.

Is having the petrol 1.8t better than the diesel by a large enough margin (if at all?) to justify the lower MPG?

What are these engines like tunability-wise?



And any other info regarding the differences of these two (I think there's differences other than engine between these two?)

The pd150 is nearly as fast as the 1.8T & gives much better mpg. BUT it s a diesel!
The 1.8t is quicker, more tunable & cheaper to buy.

At the end of the day its up to you!

How have you got 3 years NCD if you're only 19

First year of insurance they gave me a "bonus year" which everywhere I rang up for quotes accepted So come renewal I'll have three years. Only problem is I can't do online quotes accurately as most of them come back saying I don't have the right amount for the time I've been driving.


What kind of mpg figures for the two would I be looking at? May have to sit and work out the amounts in fuel it will cost me..

I know with new cars the difference in the cost of buying derv vs petrol engined models is only recouped if you do a minimum of 12k miles a year.  You still pay a premium for the used mk4 dervs - especially for the 150 - so I think you would struggle to save enough on fuel to justify the initial outlay.

for that sort of yearly mileage you'll be better off getting the 1.8T, whilst you'll be crying about the mpg difference you can get a 1.8T for half the price of a TDI 150

in my TDI 150 I normally get 53~57 mpg from a tank eg 550 miles from a tank

not sure what the 1.8T's get but my mate who owes one says he's lucky to get 350 from a tank

All dephends really. I like to have my tax cheaper and insurance a bit cheaper. But then there is the cost of the diesel which are more.

My tip is to test drive both. See what you like.

For the ammount of miles you are going to be doing I cant see the point in getting the TDI 150. It would take you ages (cant be bothered to work it out) to pay back the extra money you have forked out to buy the derv in the first place. My tip is to get the 1.8T.

But surely this initial extra cost for the derv makes more sense when you come to sell. When he comes to sell it it will still be worth more than a petrol, maybe even more the way car tax and insurance are going, it will be even more desirable to the buying public.
I'd still buy a 1.8 t petrol though.

yeah you can easily pick up a 1.8T for £3K and the TDI 150's normally start around £6K

this is down to the TDI 150 being 2001 + so they are all going to be younger, and hold their value much better than the petrols.

umm dificult and deoends how much ya wanna pay on insurance at 19 i wouldnt get anything that cost me that much on insurance
