Buying a MK2 GTI 16V (89-90)
« on: 12 April 2004, 08:42 »
Hi All

Just found this site and have been having a good read, I?m addicted already  ;D

I have the opportunity to buy a MK2 GTI 16V in Oak Green, is there anything I should be looking out for on the car, you know any major known problems with them!

Also it comes with Split Rim BBS's not sure what the model is but its the multi spoke ones, someone told me that these are hard to come by! is that true..

Thanks for reading this and I look forward to hearing from you all

Cheers Matt  8)

Hi Matt pretty robust engines the 16v the only really weakspot is the gearboxes as they tend to get worked hard and the diff rivets can shear, listen for cam chain wear as well and idle stabilisation valve can give  problems  apart from that there should be nothing major just usual car checks, personally would be more concerned with rust now with the age of the cars getting on a bit underneath behind the rear wheelarch trims the sills behind the trim front rear valances etc,the BBS splits are standard on the G60`s the 16v`s had BBS RA`s as standard..

Cheers Dude,

Arh your the owner of that fine specimen of a Gti that I have been drooling over in the galley, love the car , the rims look cool.

I hope you don?t mind but I copied one of the pics from the galley and have been mucking around with it in Photoshop (still learning the basics)

Anyway thanks for your reply, what would you say is a good price!  The bloke selling it tells me that it is immaculate, I must say from the pics it does look that way, he?s told me there?s no rust of rot anywhere..

Here are the pics of it

Odd how do you add a pic then?..

Another question for you,

Does anyone know if they done a limited edition around this time?

What sort of spec should I expect for that year!

Cheers

thanks for the comments Matt no dont mind in the slightest I`m not the best on this pc lark but I uploaded my pics onto www.muchos.co.uk clicked on the properties then copied them onto insert image (or something like that) as I said be very carefull of rust behind the bodykit  that is where all the cack has been laying for the last 13yrs or  so,price well they do seem to very quite a lot from a few hundred quid to 2-3k for minters all depends on mileage owners history etc would say there are some good bargains out there if you have a good look, how much does the guy want for his 16v whats the spec on it?

whats most annoying is the rear calipers, the handbreak mechanism's seize. might be a good point when buying (nock off a few ??'s)   ;D

spray some wd-40, spray-grease or the like onto the mechanism on the caliper every so oft stops them seizing up

Cheers, I'll give that a go in a bit!

He want ?1850 but I can knock him down a bit,  I have only had a quick chat with the bloke and have not seen the car yet, but he?s holding it for me.

He said that its a limited edition, although after searching through the forum limited editions seen to be a bit of a mystery!

The car has electric windows and mirrors, PAS, I think he said that the sun roof is manual, has a computer!!!  Sorry don?t know that much about the spec

I thin the car is a 1990 model due to its big bumpers as they were factory fitted.

Is the Oak Green quite hard to get hold of?
