disconecting battery to make car faster

OK, bear with me here, on my ST if you disconnected the battery for a while it would clear the Keep alive memory, which basically learned how you drive and delivers power accordingly, the problem was it tended to slow the car, hence disconnecting the battery would clear the KAM (keep alive memory) and make the car drive a bit faster again, does this affect the GTI's  ?

I understand what you're talking about blue.

You mean that the learning area of the ECU adapts to driving style and when it picks up on all those 'round town' jaunts it offers a more 'relaxed' throttle response and needs a good 20 mile cross country thrash to wake up and realise that you're not in fact 'Granny Appleby' but rather a not too distant cousin of Sebastian Loeb and adapts the power delivery accordingly?

As for bypassing this by disconnecting the battery and therefore all knowledge that 'Granny Appleby' even exists then I don't know but it's a novel thought and wouldn't suprise me if it worked.

Does it not reset this every time you switch off anyway and relearns when you start up again?

I do notice that my car sometimes feels faster (or slower) for no apparent reason.

not sure what it does on the GTi but on the ST it seems to store and keep what its learned, hence clearing the KAM, you dont actually need to disconnect the battery on the ST as you can pull the fuse for the KAM and that sorts it, just wondered if the GTi had a similar characteristic

in my experience the gti will change to my driving style within 30 secs or so,this is after my gf been driving it for 2 or 3 days.

On the 1.8T Leon I had (same on the Mk4 Golf I would think) you could reset the thottle body which is basically resets the alighment (TBA).  To do this you could either disconnect battery for 10mins, use VAGCOM or open the drivers door and bonnet, turn iginition on (so lights on dash are on) you would then hear the TB resetting (high pitched squeel).

The Mk5 can be done via VAGCOM also and I think from the same bonnet method - sure I did it once this way.

Word of warning DO NOT touch the throttle when this is happening obviously.

I'm sure the Trottle body aligns itself every time the ignition is switched on, so the ECU knows the position of the butterfly valve? And can't see how re-alignment of it will improve the performance?

MK4 golf used to do this the ECU would adapt to the current driving pattern, so a week before 1/4 mile or trackday i would give it some to kick it back into life.Imagine the MK5 would be the same.

Depends how you have been driving .. done a long journey stuck in traffic plodding along vs a spirited drive down some country lanes

I think it the car has been off for a while and you switch on the ignition but dont turn on the engine it will do it then also, not every time though.
