Hi. New member. 2005 silver Golf GTI.
Get a cup of tea and a couple of hobnobs, this might take sometime! I've had the car for about 8 months but noticed a few months ago a light brown coloured mousse in the oil filler cap. Googled the problem straight away and it seems if you do short mileages, as I do, small amounts of condensation can build up and this really isn't a problem. I've always given my cars regular oil changes so decided to take it off the longlife servicing and had the local VW garage at Neyland give it a service. The mousse problem was confirmed by the garage that short trips and fully synthetic oil can cause this. About a month later the car failed to start. Called the RAC out but he had no luck and thought it may be the flywheel sensor. He towed it to the VW dealer, it was a Saturday and because of this I missed Wales winning the Grand Slam on telly! Monday morning the VW dealers called me and said there appears to be more water in the oil than there should be, and as they had just done the service they should know. Seems a sensor had picked this up and stopped the car starting? They seem to think a porous head is the problem after eliminating every thing else. VW seem to know about this problem. My warranty had one month to run. The local VW dealers have been excellent tackling this but they did say that although they will be fitting a new head under warranty I may have to pay for a new cam belt and tensioner etc. the warranty people may not cover these parts. I'll be pretty cheesed of if they won't but will take it all the way if required. Hope this is useful information. Dayglopirate.
