sticking clutch pedal
« on: 18 March 2008, 16:25 »
hello all ive not been here for a while which is great!

anyways.....

my clutch pedal when i fully push to the floor i.e. when waiting at a junction. sometimes tends to want to stay there so i have to flick it back up with my toes and push it less hard to get the car in gear.

im suspecting my clutch cable is wearing out through its sheafing prehaps and is about to let go on me. can anyone say this is the tell tale sign of the cable about to die or something else clutch/gearbox related.

im reluctant to spend money on shotgun maintenance right now if im not going to cure the problem as every penny counts at the mo as my other half has a bun in the oven! so confirmation or advice would be great

cheers

oh its a 91 J plate 8V digi GTI

It may be worth having a look to see if the pedal is being fouled by the plastics under the dash, had this with the throttle once.

Had exactly this problem, on mine i undid the cable from the release arm, cable tied the end so it was above my head height and poured a concoction of oil and wd40 down the sheath, left it 5 minutes, actioned the pedal to get the cable moving, then repeated about 4 times. Had no problems since, although ultimately it'll be less hassle getting a new cable.

No prob, change the clutch cable first, may as well for the cost and simplicity, or at least disconnect it and check it's movement is smooth.  The bearing itself is located behind the 'tap on' green thin metal end cover on the end of the gearbox. It's the bearing that gets pressed when you engage the clutch.

I got the garage to do it so I can't help with what happens behind that cover. Check your haynes or the online bentley manual.

http://www.iol.ie/~kilkennyhockey/BentleyManual/TM01/ch6.2.html

You can see it in the "To replace clutch release shaft oil seal:" section about 3/4 of the way down the page. They call it the 'Clutch Release Bearing".

The bearing was a fiver or so from VW and I got a new cover from them as well. Replacing the cover is not essential but it means you can get the old one of without worrying about destroying it.
